The WWE Titles: The Price Of Gold Continues To Rise

Matthew HesterJul 23, 2009

Hello everyone. As always, I would like to thank all of you for spending a little time with me today.

I can’t help but be a bit surprised of late with the WWE. It would appear that they are finally doing the right thing and have stopped hot swapping the titles. I don’t know if this was planned or just coincidence, but what ever the reason is, it is nice to see.

I am also happy to see that the IC, U.S. and tag titles have more juice on them these days. They have done an excellent job making these belts important again. I always felt that you can make any belt credible with the right booking.

With Orton and Punk retaining the last couple months, it has helped accomplish a couple of things. It has not only made both Orton and Punk more credible champs. It has also brought back a little more honor to both the WWE and Heavyweight belt.

This is different then before when Orton was dropping the strap at the next PPV after he would win the belt. It would seem that the Age of Orton is indeed finally here. He can be a great champion if they keep this up.

All the WWE has to do now is find some more opponents for Orton to face at upcoming PPV's.

As far as Punk is concerned, he is finally shaping up into a decent champ. His first time around, I was a little skeptical.

He looked a little lost out there with the strap but now seems a lot more comfortable with the belt around his waist. Of course, this tends to happen when they book him right. It is also only logical that since they have let him keep the strap, he would appear stronger.

The ECW strap is probably the weakest of the three heavyweight titles but even though, it is getting proper respect. We have had Swagger, Christian, and Dreamer hold the belt lately.

All three of them have done a great job keeping the juice flowing into the belt. We have seen some great title defenses and feuds surrounding the belt. It looks like it will only get better with Benjamin and Kozlov in the mix.

My biggest praise goes to the performers that hold the smaller belts. With the damage the IC and tag belts has taken over the years. I thought that they would never recover any glory again.

Rey Mysterio has done wonders bringing importance to the IC title. With recent feuds like the one he had with Jericho, and with the possibility of a Ziggler feud, the IC title has never looked more prestigious.

I only hope that the WWE continues to provide fresh feuds and title matches on PPV's for the IC strap. Without keeping the juice going, this belt can easily fade away again.

Let’s just hope this doesn’t happen.

The U.S. strap was one of the only secondary titles that didn’t need much help. We have had credible champs with solid feuds and matches for the last couple years. I like Kofi as a champ as he continues to bring honor to the belt.

The only belts that I still have some concern with are the tag straps.

As it stands now, they are a hot property. This is mainly because of Edge and Jericho though. You can put any belt on those two and it will look good.

Where will the WWE go with the tag straps after they are off Jericho’s waist?

They broke up the Colons and Legacy isn’t that far away. We have the Hart Dynasty and Cryme Tyme as the only real legit tag teams left.

I find it hard to believe that the WWE will be able to keep people interested with just a few tag teams fighting for the belts. If the WWE forgets all about the tag straps, I wouldn’t be surprised.

In a way the WWE titles are like the stock market.

The belts will only be as important as the company wants them to be. It doesn’t take a mastermind though to figure out how to keep them hot.

It is a simple enough recipe that the WWE follow. Keep the belts around peoples' waists for a decent period of time. If you do that, you can build up feuds and story lines that people will want to see.

Only time will tell if the WWE is smart enough to keep the belts hot. The only advice that I can give is for you to enjoy it while it lasts.

Thank you again for spending some time with me today.

As always, have a great day and God bless.
