Floyd Mayweather's Father Comments on Potential Manny Pacquiao Fight

Mike ChiariOct 9, 2014

Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Manny Pacquiao is arguably the greatest boxing match that has never been, but Floyd Mayweather Sr. doesn't expect that label to last for much longer.ย ย ย ย

According to Ben Thompson of FightHype.com, Money Mayweather's father and former trainer believes a clash between the two biggest stars in boxing is inevitable:

"

Man, I'm pretty sure that if don't nothing else happen, I'm pretty sure he's gonna get Pacquiao ... it's gonna happen. That fight's gonna happen. Trust me. That fight's definitely gonna happen. It's a fight for the world, man, right there. It's the biggest fight that has ever been in life, so like I said man, that fight's gonna happen. I'm gonna tell you right now, (Mayweather Jr.) never told me the fight's gonna happen, but I'm gonna tell you, the fight's gonna happen.

On Friday, Fighthype.com had a follow up from Mayweather Jr.:

"

Well my father is totally wrong. Like I said before, we have people constantly being removed from the Mayweather Promotions team, Team Mayweather, and we also have people being removed from The Money Team. I want my dad to be with my team, but if he continues to go out there and speak on things that he has no knowledge about without communicating with me, then I must get a new trainer. I'm just saying, when Pacquiao was sleeping, everybody was like, "Y'all crazy for trying to make that Mayweather-Pacquiao fight." You know what's so crazy? I just look at the situation like this, ever since Ariza left Pacquiao, he hasn't had a knockout. What a coincidence!

"

Mayweather vs. Pacquiao may be the one true superfight capable of boosting boxing's popularity in a significant way. The future Hall of Famers have seemingly been on the verge of agreeing to a fight on several occasions, but it has never come to fruition.

Much of that likely has to do with Mayweather's disdain for Bob Arum, who represents Pacquiao through Top Rank Promotions.

Even with so many obstacles standing in the way, Floyd Sr. seems supremely confident that it is now a matter of when, rather than if, a Mayweather vs. Pacquiao fight will occur.

If it does end up happening, it may have to be very soon. The 37-year-old Mayweather is planning on retiring after two more fights, which is when his megadeal with Showtime expires, according to ESPN.com's Dan Rafael.

"I only got two more fights left and after the next two fights I just want to build the Mayweather Promotions brand," Mayweather said. "My next fight is in May and my last fight is in September, so a year from now will be my last fight."

Mayweather is currently 47-0, and there doesn't appear to be anyone capable of handing him his first loss aside from possibly Pacquiao.

There is clearly bad blood between the two fighters, as they have continually taken shots at each other. After being criticized by Pac-Man recently, Mayweather taunted the Filipino star on Twitter:

Each side has been accused of dodging the other at various times throughout this feud, but Floyd Sr. has no doubt that his son is unafraid of Pacquiao, per Thompson:

"

Well, a lot of people are going to say, 'Floyd was scared of Pacquiao. Floyd was this, that, and the other.' Floyd is not scared of Pacquiao, man. Believe me as I tell you today. ...ย Pacquiao is tailor-made for Floyd. He's tailor-made to eat the right hand all day long. You gotta remember, Pacquiao is a southpaw. He's a southpaw and Floyd is right-handed, so he'll eat right hands and left hooks all night, and more than likely, he will be going to sleep again. Believe me!

"

Although Floyd Jr. has yet to make a definitive comment regarding the prospects of a bout with Pacquiao, Floyd Sr.'s comments certainly add fuel to a fire that has been burning for many years.

With Mayweather potentially on the verge of retirement and Pacquiao getting up there in age at 35, there isn't much time left to make this fantasy a reality.

As long as they are both still active fighters, though, there remains hope among boxing fans.
