Crossing Borders: An American Football Fan Developing A Soccer Passion

Tim BielikJul 22, 2009

Two years ago, I rarely watched soccer and was more concerned about my Buckeyes and Cleveland Browns football teams.

But I must say, I don't know how, but you guys have got me hooked and watching.

I remember the one game that I was most into was a matchup featuring my new favorite team, Liverpool FC.

In a Premiership game, Liverpool trailed by one just before the 80th minute. In a ridiculous flash, the group brought it together and came back to win the match in shocking fashion.

I admit right now I am not the sharpest on football strategy and superstars, but I am learning.

As I sit watching some of the best teams play, I am impressed at the athleticism of these players on the field. Many can kick more than half the length of the field, and run eight to 10 miles in a 90 minute match while not in a straight line.

In America, most of our best athletes play sports involving hands whether they can dunk an alley-oop, or throw a 60-yard Hail Mary.

Watching soccer I see this freakish athleticism take on new forms. And it really impresses me how they can put a perfect spin on the ball and leap across eight yards of goal to stop a shot.

Being from America, most of the soccer I find on ESPN is either Premiership matches or UEFA Champions League tournaments.

And based on what I have seen, the English Premiership football is from an American perspective to world football what the SEC is to American college football.

The league is stacked with four clubs capable of being champions of European football. And in just four years, Liverpool FC, Chelsea, Manchester United, and Arsenal have all competed in the UEFA Champions League final.

That in itself is incredibly impressive.

Now it has taken me some time, but I have quickly learned a few of nuances of the game, such as the importance of set pieces on kicks. And obviously, I still have a lot to learn as well.

But I have definitely grown fond of the world's game and definitely will be watching.

I will, however, take this opportunity to pledge my soccer allegiance to Liverpool. You guys are the ones to get me hooked and I hope to enjoy a great year of football this upcoming season.
