Denver Broncos vs. New York Jets: Spread Analysis and Pick Prediction

OddsShark.comOct 7, 2014

Peyton Manning and his Denver Broncos are dangerous wherever one might run into them, and they've had great success recently playing on the road, where the spreads are more manageable, going 7-3 against the spread in their last 10 games on the room-service circuit.

The Broncos are on the road again this week, favored by a touchdown for their game with the New York Jets Sunday afternoon at MetLife Stadium.

Point spread: Broncos opened as six-point favorites; the total was 47. (Line updates and matchup report)

Odds Shark computer prediction: 27.1-17.9 Broncos

Why the Broncos can cover the spread

The Broncos rebounded from their first loss of the season against the Seattle Seahawks to beat the Arizona Cardinals last week 41-20, covering the spread as eight-point favorites. Denver only led that game 24-20 through three quarters but pulled away with a 17-point fourth quarter.

The Broncos racked up 568 yards of offense, while holding the admittedly shorthanded Cardinals to 215 yards. Running back Montee Ball, expected to take over for the departed Knowshon Moreno this season, pulled a groin last week, but Ronnie Hillman filled in and provided 64 yards on the ground.

For the season, Denver ranks sixth in total offense and 14th in total defense.

Why the Jets can cover the spread

The Jets just got whitewashed on a cross-country trip to San Diego 31-0, but we'll chalk that one up to the travel and the fact that the Chargers are a hot outfit right now.

New York has been outgained in three of its five games this season but has outrushed four of its first five foes. And outrushing opponents often helps win games and cover spreads in the NFL. On the season, the Jets rank sixth in the league in rushing at 139 yards per game and sixth against the run, allowing just 83 yards per game.

If the Jets could just get some help from the quarterback position, they could make this one interesting.

Smart Pick

Denver is a handful, but if the Jets can pressure Peyton, run the ball a little and move the chains, the home dog might be in play. And maybe the wind will blow a few of Manning's floaters into the wrong hands. After all, the Broncos' last visit to MetLife didn't go too well.

So in thinking all that is possible, the pick here goes with the Jets, plus the points.

Trends

  • Denver is 4-2 ATS in its last six games on the road
  • NY Jets are 2-4 straight up in their last six games when playing Denver
