Rookie WRs Who Will Outplay Their Draft Value 📈
Pro Football Talk originally reported the news:
This season, Thompkins totaled just six receptions for 53 yards with the Patriots before his release. Those numbers come a year after he had 32 receptions on 70 targets for 466 yards and four touchdowns.
Ian Rapoport of NFL.com offered his thoughts on the Raiders' move:
The fall from grace in New England was quick, but he was once considered a potential breakout star. Prior to his rookie season, Tom Brady had glowing remarks for Thompkins, per Mike Reiss of ESPNBoston.com:
"He works his tail off, so I think that’s one of his best attributes. There is nothing that has ever been given to him, so it’s great to see a competitor like that. And when your guys make plays like that, it just elevates the rest of the team. Not every play are you going to be open by 10 yards. Sometimes you’ve got to lay out and make the play, and that’s how you get to be a great offense.
"
Despite earning the trust of Tom Brady prior to last season, he never quite lived up to the hype. Heading to an Oakland organization in desperate need of offensive weapons, Thompkins has a chance to revitalize his career and make an immediate impact.
The Raiders are far from a great organization currently, but having a young quarterback in Derek Carr means the two could grow together in the future. Given a chance to play alongside James Jones and Andre Holmes, Thompkins might thrive in Oakland.
