Real Madrid Transfer News: Sami Khedira Sale Would Be Wise Move from Los Blancos

Rory MarsdenOct 5, 2014

Sami Khedira's future at Real Madrid becomes more uncertain by the day and reports now suggest he will be sold in January.

According to Fichajes (h/t to Metro), the German World Cup winner has agreed to personal terms to join Arsenal in the new year, with the Gunners now needing to agree to a fee with Los Blancos for the defensive midfielder.

Indeed, as has long been reported, Real and Khedira are not progressing in sorting out a new contract for the 27-year-old, and with his current deal set to expire next summer, the Spanish giants would be wise to move him on in January, per Simon Jones of the Daily Mail.

While he is a fantastic player, he is not currently making regular first-team appearances for Carlo Ancelotti's side—he has been recently dogged by injury—and the fact that he has not signed a new contract is perhaps indicative of unrest.

He has appeared in just two La Liga games this season, coming off the bench on both occasions per WhoScored.com, and Luka Modric and summer-signing Toni Kroos have become the first-choice pairing in the centre of midfield.

If reports of the Arsenal move are indeed correct, Real could pick up a decent fee for Khedira, and thus his sale should surely be a no-brainer if the alternative is him leaving for free next summer.

The Gunners desperately need more strength in defensive midfield, per the BBC's Mark Pougatch, and would likely be prepared to pay a decent price for proven quality such as Khedira:

Arsenal have won only two matches from their opening seven league games and continue to look weak in the middle of the park, an area which Khedira would definitely improve as Arsene Wenger's current options are Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini.

Anthony Chapman in the Express suggests Arsenal are prepared to pay £10 million to claim Khedira's signature, a fee which Real would be stupid to turn down for a player nearly out of contract.

Along with Kroos and Modric, Asier Illarramendi looks to have improved this season and could well be the man to fill the defensive-midfield role vacated by the departed Xabi Alonso, per European football writer Lee Roden:

The 24-year-old Spaniard had one of his best games in a Madrid shirt against Elche last month, per Opta, a very good sign for Ancelotti:

If Illarramendi can continue to perform well—he was very good on Wednesday against Ludogorets in the Champions League—he could cover Khedira's departure.

And the Spaniard is a younger player who is most certainly less injury-prone than Khedira. The German played only 13 La Liga matches last season because of injury and is struggling for fitness this term.

This unreliability is a problem for Ancelotti and Real, and thus, if they can get a decent price from Arsenal for Khedira, they should sell him on.

Khedira is not a player who would enjoy warming the bench, and that will no doubt often be the case this season for the simple reason that Los Blancos' squad is overflowing with quality.

Real should cash in on him now as his reputation is such that he would demand a good price in January, and allowing him to leave for free in the summer would make little sense.
