Chelsea Transfer News: Buzz Surrounding Sami Khedira, Victor Moses and More

Gianni VerschuerenOct 2, 2014

Chelsea's 2014-15 season has seen nothing but success so far, as Jose Mourinho's balanced and deep squad has cruised to the top of the Premier League standings and looks like a safe bet to qualify for the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League.

Good teams never stop improving, however, and Mourinho knows it. The January transfer window will give the Blues a chance to add one or two key pieces who could contribute to a title run, and while Chelsea likely won't spend millions, it would be a surprise to see the window pass without any movement.

Let's have a look at the latest transfer rumours surrounding the Blues.

Sami Khedira

Real Madrid's Sami Khedira is in the final year of his current contract and is expected to leave the Spanish capital, and the Blues are reportedly ready to make an offer in January.

According to the Daily Express' Anthony Chapman, Manchester United have prepared a £10 million offer for the Germany international, and the Blues are planning to match it.

Chelsea hardly have a need for another central midfielder, although most of the current options are offensive-minded. Khedira could provide cover for Nemanja Matic and some versatility as a traditional box-to-box force.

The 27-year-old likely won't be a starter, however, and the Red Devils could take advantage of the fact he'd be an instant starter in Louis van Gaal's squad. Desperate for midfield cover, United would be willing to spend significantly more on the World Cup winner if that's what's required.

Khedira has previously played under Mourinho with Los Blancos, and the midfielder could be keen on a reunion. With his contract set to expire in June, expect to hear a lot more rumours regarding the German midfielder.

STOKE ON TRENT, ENGLAND - SEPTEMBER 29: Victor Moses of Stoke City battles for the ball with Daryl Janmaat of Newcastle United during the Barclays Premier League match between Stoke City and Newcastle United at Britannia Stadium on September 29, 2014 in

On loan with Stoke City, Victor Moses has enjoyed a strong start to the 2014-15 season. The Nigeria international no longer appears to have a future at Stamford Bridge, opening the door for a potential transfer.

Stoke chairman Peter Coates told The Sentinel (h/t Sky Sports) they've yet to approach Chelsea to make the move permanent, though:

"

Although we are delighted with the start he has made for us, it is still very early days and so where that one goes I have no idea.

We haven’t even discussed it yet because we are so early in the season and such a lot can happen, so there is no sense of urgency.

I’m just pleased with what he has produced so far and pleased that we have him for the whole season.

"

The 23-year-old midfielder has recorded two assists in four appearances for the Potters, according to WhoScored.com, showcasing his development over the last few years.

The Blues aren't exactly short of top-quality attacking midfielders, however, and the fact Moses has now been loaned out in consecutive seasons is a bad sign for his future.

Moses appears to be enjoying his time with Stoke, but it's still early in the season. If his form continues, the Potters will likely approach Chelsea with an eye on a permanent deal soon enough.

Reece Oxford

West Ham United's 15-year-old talent Reece Oxford is yet to sign a long-term deal with the Hammers, and after impressing for the team's U21 side, Arsenal and Chelsea are getting ready to lure the centre-back away from their London rivals, according to the Daily Express' James Dickenson.

Oxford stepped into the spotlight during the summer as captain of England's U17 team, which competed in the Nordic Under-17 Tournament in Denmark. He's already drawing comparisons to Rio Ferdinand, another former West Ham defender who went on to star for Manchester United for over a decade.

The 15-year-old already plays regularly for the team's U21 side and was even on the bench for the Hammers' Capital One Cup match against Sheffield United. According to the Daily Mirror's Darren Lewis, West Ham have offered him one of the largest contracts for his age group.

Football commentator Ian Abrahams is a fan:

He's yet to commit to the Hammers, however, and given his immense talent and rapid progression, it's no wonder both the Gunners and the Blues believe they might be able to bring him in. It's rare for such a young player to already have the physical requirements to take on players five years older, particularly defenders.

Oxford has "future superstar" written all over him, and with Chelsea shifting their transfer focus toward young talents in recent years, he'll likely be at the top of their list come January.
