Inter Milan vs. Karabakh-Azersun: Winners and Losers from Europa League Game

Dan ColasimoneOct 2, 2014

In what was a fairly laboured performance, Inter Milan came away 2-0 winners over Karabakh on Thursday night to continue their perfect record in the Europa League group stages this season.

Inter now have two wins from two games, while the Azerbaijan team left the San Siro with nothing to show for a strong performance.

The in-form Danilo D'Ambrosio scored the opener for Inter in the first half before Mauro Icardi secured the result in the 85th minute.

Here are the winners and losers from the match.

Winner: Danilo D'Ambrosio

1 of 5

Inter have a wealth of options at full-back, but it is D'Ambrosio who has been the standout in that role in recent weeks.

It was he who scored the superb winner from right-back against Dnipro in Inter's last Europa League outing, and he was at it again on Thursday.

Switched to the left flank, the Italian was just as effective, in both defence and attack.

His 18th-minute curling strike from just outside the area ensured the game became Inter's to control after what had been a difficult start for the home team.

Winner: Mauro Icardi

2 of 5

Argentine striker Mauro Icardi was a few minutes away from falling into the "loser" category in this slideshow, but he redeemed himself from a generally poor performance by scoring an excellent goal in the 85th minute.

Before that, he had only had two clear chances in the match: a swerving shot from distance that was saved by the goalkeeper and a glaring miss in the 82nd minute after being put through on goal by Joel Obi.

Mediocre service was partly to blame for the youngster's quiet night, but he also did not seem to be finding himself in the right positions when Inter did get forward.

The goal that killed off the game was all class, however, resulting from a low, powerful shot from a very tight angle on the right.

With Rodrigo Palacio returning to full fitness and Dani Osvaldo showing some fine form, the battle for starting places up front for the Nerazzurri is going to be an interesting one in the weeks ahead.

Winner: Qurban Qurbanov

3 of 5

Karabakh manager, the wonderfully named Qurban Qurbanov, deserves a great deal of credit for instilling a positive attitude in his side.

Facing the most daunting task of the group stage in taking on Inter at the San Siro, Qurbanov could have been forgiven for sending his side out with the aim of defending deep and attempting to secure a 0-0 draw.

Instead the team played an uptempo brand of football that often forced the Italians onto the back foot, while still managing to keep a solid defensive structure.

But for a couple of well-taken Inter goals, Qurbanov's plans were well-executed.

Loser: Zdravko Kuzmanovic

4 of 5

There are several playmaking options at Walter Mazzarri's disposal, so those battling for playing time cannot afford to waste their opportunities when given a run by the coach.

Zdravko Kuzmanovic was largely ineffective against Karabakh until he was substituted just before the hour mark.

His replacement, Gary Medel, is ostensibly a far more defensive-minded midfielder, but even he offered more drive going forward than the Serb.

Kuzmanovic must be well and truly behind Mateo Kovacic in the playmaking pecking order at Inter now.

Winner: Badavi Huseynov

5 of 5

Karabakh's players did a fine job across the board. Central defender Badavi Huseynov was particularly impressive, however, at both keeping Inter's attackers at bay and distributing the ball when his side were in possession.

The 23-year-old saw plenty of the ball and was often the man passing out from the back to get his side moving forward.

He was also disciplined in defence throughout the 90 minutes despite being caught out on the turn by Icardi's pace as the visitors pressed forward in search of an equaliser.
