Charlie Villanueva: The Nice, Funny Friend Of Chris Bosh
Amongst unrestricted free agent forwards available this summer, it is easy to argue that Charlie Villanueva was the most promising.
David Lee, Paul Millsap, and Glen Davis are restricted free agents and Rasheed Wallace and Antonio McDyess are getting up there in years.
Villanueva has proven to be a talented scorer and has still not fully realized his potential on the court.
What Pistons fans can also look forward to are the intangibles.
High Character
Right at the beginning of his NBA career, Charlie Villanueva was challenged with one of the most awkward jeering to be received at the NBA Draft. He responded with an impressive rookie career and making the All-Rookie 1st team. He also received the February 2006 Community Assist Award for his efforts with the National Alopecia Areata Foundation.
Media Exposure
Charlie Villanueva is one of the most active pro athlete Twitterers to his own detriment (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3990853). He also did this skit for Jimmy Kimmel Live ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qu-ATEzudHU ) , so you can appreciate him being accessible and a little funny.
Friends with Chris Bosh
Playing together at Toronto, Charlie and Chris became close teammates. This summer, they challenged each other to reach 50,000 followers on Twitter, the loser having to portray a funny character of the winner’s choosing on video. Every once in a while rumors come out that Chris Bosh would really like to play in Detroit. With an old buddy like Villanueva here, the Pistons look that much more attractive. Chris Bosh controls his own destiny and if he wants Detroit, he could force Toronto into a sign-and-trade.
