15 Random Things Alex Rodriguez Has Been Up to
Since his suspension for PEDs took him out of baseball for the entire 2014 season, Alex Rodriguez’s name has been thrown around a lot less.
But with the end of his suspension looming and the hanging up of Derek Jeter’s pinstripes, get ready to hear A-Rod's name a lot more often. It’s time to ease you into it.
If you’re just dying to know what the aging slugger has been up to in 2014, we’ve got you covered. Here’s a hint: The list does not include "Going to Derek Jeter Day at Yankee Stadium."
Some things make enough sense—attending Miami football games and hanging out with his girlfriend. Others are just really random, like playing in a mariachi band and (possibly) creating a LinkedIn profile.
You miss A-Rod? Check out what he’s been up to, ranked from least random to most random.
Watching College Baseball
1 of 15
A-Rod is a big fan of all things “The U,” including of course, its baseball team.
He took in a home game in April and tweeted about it, and he also made his way to Arizona to see what ASU’s team had to offer.
There’s no way to know if he’s been keeping up with his professional comrades, but he sure knows what’s happening in college.
Hanging out at Club LIV
2 of 15A-Rod lives in Miami, so it isn’t all that surprising that he would be hanging out at a club there.
Is he trying to be a DJ here, though? Hard to say.
Tailgating in Nebraska
3 of 15A-Rod is loyal to Miami—in addition to Hurricanes baseball, he can often be seen at "The U" football games as well.
He even travels to support his team. A-Rod was spotted tailgating in Lincoln, Neb. for Miami’s game against the Nebraska Cornhuskers in September.
Tweeting Congratulations
4 of 15
Among his couple dozen total tweets are a few of the congratulatory nature.
Among those honored by rare A-Rod authored tweets were the AL All-Star team, the Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks, the U.S. men's national soccer team and also Germany.
What, nothing for Derek Jeter?
Attending Charity Events
5 of 15A-Rod was in New York City for a fundraiser during Derek Jeter’s last series in Boston. The event, held at the Waldorf-Astoria, was to benefit the Buoniconti Fund to Cure Paralysis and the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis.
Obviously obliging all of his adoring fans, he took several photos with attendees, including Grant Hill and Pedro Martinez.
Not Meeting with the Yankees
6 of 15
Related: During his trip to Manhattan, A-Rod did not meet with the New York Yankees.
With his suspension nearing its end, A-Rod could be looking toward the 2015 baseball season, for which he is still under contract with the Yankees.
The New York Post, however, reported that A-Rod did not meet with the team while in New York.
Taking the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge
7 of 15Not one to be left out (unless it’s the 2014 baseball season), A-Rod participated in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.
It’s unclear who nominated him to participate, but he took it upon himself to nominate former New York Yankee teammates Mariano Rivera and Robinson Cano.
High School Reunion in Pasadena
8 of 15
Keeping with his usual trend of attending sporting events, A-Rod was at the BCS National Championship Game in Pasadena, Calif.
He tweeted a photo of himself with some random folks with the caption, “High school reunion at the BCS Championship game but it's still all about #TheU.”
From this I infer that he was with some high school classmates and that he was not rooting for the eventual champion Florida State Seminoles.
Jay Z Concert with Manny Machado
9 of 15
Just because he’s not seeing his fellow baseballers on the field, A-Rod is still getting in some quality time off the field.
He tweeted a photo of himself along with Yonder Alonso and Manny Machado at a Jay Z concert in January.
Tweeting About Malcolm Gladwell
10 of 15
Even A-Rod can be star struck.
In March, he tweeted a #tbt photo of himself with Malcolm Gladwell, staff writer for The New Yorker, author of The Tipping Point and general awesome human.
Gladwell was apparently speaking at a University of Miami event when the meeting happened.
Family Day with His Girlfriend and Ex-Wife
11 of 15
Between football games and celebrity run-ins, A-Rod still finds time to hang out with his girlfriend, former professional wrestler, Torrie Wilson.
That’s not random. What is random is that Wilson joined A-Rod and his ex-wife on a family day out with their two daughters in Manhattan.
Awkward?
Selling His Car Dealership
12 of 15
OK, so it’s not clear if A-Rod personally sold the Texas car dealership with his name on it, but the fact is, it’s been sold.
Alex Rodriguez Mercedes-Benz was purchased by Group 1 Automotive and has been renamed Mercedes-Benz of Clear Lake.
On the topic of re-naming, Pete DeLongchamps of Group 1 told David Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle, "It had nothing to do with Alex Rodriguez's reputation or his baseball career."
Playing in a Mariachi Band
13 of 15
During a trip to Cancun in early 2014, A-Rod was all smiles as he wore a sombrero and played with a mariachi band.
Ever the celebrity, A-Rod can always count on social media users to capture his random activities.
Repping Notre Dame
14 of 15As we’ve seen, A-Rod digs Miami. But Notre Dame?
Several Instagrammers caught the suspended slugger at the Notre Dame vs. Michigan football game in September.
He was rocking the ND polo and everything, so...it’s confusing.
(Possibly) Creating a LinkedIn Profile
15 of 15
In September, Brian Costa of The Wall Street Journal reported the possibility that Alex Rodriguez might have created a LinkedIn page.
The profile (which is no longer online—shocking), listed A-Rod’s title as Founder, CEO and President of the Miami/Fort Lauderdale-based ARod Corp.
According to the article, a LinkedIn spokeswoman said, "All signals indicate it is a real profile." Whatever that means.
