Hideo Itami, Kevin Steen and Latest WWE NXT Developmental News

Ryan DilbertOct 1, 2014

Hideo Itami and Kevin Steen aren't on the same track as most WWE NXT prospects; they're racing on the inside one.

The latest reports on the newest arrivals to WWE developmental point to things moving more swiftly than we've seen in the past. Their journey through Full Sail University won't be the drawn-out kind.

WWE's reported interest in another Ring of Honor star as well as plans for Carmella and a fantasy camp highlight the other latest NXT news.

The NXT landscape is morphing in a hurry, with Itami already making an impact, Finn Balor (Prince Devitt) working his first set of TV tapings and Steen set to do the same.

Backstage News on Kevin Steen's Debut

1 of 5

Just have a little more patience; Kevin Steen is coming to NXT TV soon.

Mike Johnson of PWInsider reports, "The belief is that Kevin Steen will likely debut on the next NXT TV taping, although that can always change. One source believed NXT was staggering the debuts of all the new signings so that they can maximize each one, which obviously makes sense."

Finn Balor recently worked his first TV taping, per ProWrestling.net (note: link contains spoilers). It looks like Steen will be doing the same at the next batch of tapings.

With those two additions, the NXT hierarchy will be transformed.

Sami Zayn's and Adrian Neville's places at the top of the ladder won't be so secure. Guys like Aiden English and Kalisto will likely get pushed down the prospect rankings.

Steen, like Balor, is a special talent. It's no guarantee that he fits into the WWE world, but he has the mic skills and ring prowess to be a force at Full Sail University and beyond.

WWE Reportedly Interested in Adam Cole

2 of 5

WWE may pluck one more star from Ring of Honor.

After nabbing Seth Rollins, Cesaro, Daniel Bryan, Kevin Steen and CM Punk from that company, it appears officials have an interest in Adam Cole. According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (subscription required; h/t Wrestling Inc) WWE has recently been sending feelers out to Cole.

It's not surprising to hear of this. Cole is an impressive talent.

His quickness, command of matches and the charisma he exudes in promos make him someone in whom WWE should definitely be interested. At 6'0'', 201 pounds, his size isn't ideal, but he's well-built and has a marketable look.

In the pursuit of the world's best talent, it was only inevitable that WWE would come looking Cole's way.

Carmella's Role Going Forward

3 of 5

WWE has shown only glimpses of Carmella, Enzo Amore's hairdresser, so far. The reported plan is to keep her on screen and maintain that alliance even with Carmella (kayfabe) losing her hairdressing job.

PWInsider's Mike Johnson reports that "Carmella will be a regular character going forward." Johnson notes that Carmella will continue to work with Amore and Colin Cassady.

That's great news for Carmella, as she gets to jump onto a train that already has momentum. She'll be able to be slowly worked into the mix, moving from sidekick to star when she's ready.

Judging by what she's shown at house shows and her cameos on NXT, she's got swagger to spare. There's some magnetism in her presence, which will aid her in trying to surpass the other Divas on the roster.

Rumors About Future NXT Call-Ups

4 of 5

Even though Hideo Itami only recently debuted on NXT and Finn Balor just worked his first TV taping, there is already talk of promoting them to the main roster.

According to F4WOnline (subscription required; h/t Wrestling Inc) Balor and Itami will be called up to the main roster before the majority of the NXT talents. The impression the report gives is that neither prospect will hang around developmental for long.

With the amount of experience they both have, it's not as if either man needs to learn how to wrestle.

Their time at NXT should be focused on adjusting to the WWE style, which partially means Itami toning down his kicks. In addition, both men need to find and become comfortable with their new personae.

Once that's done, there's no need to dawdle. Getting them up to the main roster quickly will just give fans less time to wait for the inevitable classics they will produce.

NXT Fantasy Camp Update

5 of 5

Rumors and rumblings about a possible NXT fantasy camp may lead somewhere soon.

PWInsider's Mike Johnson reports, "WWE is in the early process of developing Fantasy Camps for fans that would take place at the WWE Performance Center in Winter Park, Florida. The company is also looking into doing one-day VIP events at the Performance Center as well."

Back in August, WWE sent out a survey to its fans, trying to gauge interest in the idea. Wrestling News World's Richard Gray shared images of the survey.

Apparently, the responses were positive enough for WWE to move forward.

It's a smart move and would be easy money. The idea proposed in the survey included no physical activity, so liability wouldn't be an issue. Even without the option to take bumps, there's plenty of appeal in seeing NXT from behind the scenes.
