Manchester United Transfer News: Major Names Linked to Louis Van Gaal's Squad

Gianni VerschuerenSep 28, 2014

Plenty of star power joined Manchester United in the summer of 2014, and if the latest reports are to be believed, Louis van Gaal's squad is set to welcome a new batch of top talent in the near future.

The Red Devils' start to the 2014-15 season was far from perfect, but early struggles were always expected. Van Gaal is slowly trying to right the ship, with UEFA Champions League qualification in mind for next campaign.

Here are the latest top stars linked with a move to Old Trafford.

Cristiano Ronaldo

MADRID, SPAIN - SEPTEMBER 23: Cristiano Ronaldo (L) of Real Madrid CF competes for the ball with goalkeeper Manu Herrera of Elche FC during the La Liga match between Real Madrid CF and Elche CF at Estadio Santiago Bernabeu on September 23, 2014 in Madrid

Arguably the biggest star in the sport, Cristiano Ronaldo will remain linked with a move back to his former club until either it happens or he retires. According to Goal.com's Duncan Castles, however, Real Madrid have informed the star forward it's not going to happen this season:

"

Real Madrid have made it clear to Cristiano Ronaldo that they have no intention of allowing him to return to Manchester United this summer, Goal understands.

New Old Trafford manager Louis van Gaal publicly stated an interest in signing the 29-year-old last week, but the Champions League holders have ruled out the possibility of Ronaldo leaving the Bernabeu at the end of the season and have refused to discuss a price for the forward.

"

Los Blancos endured a difficult start to the season but have since bounced back, scoring almost at will in recent weeks. Optimism is high in the Spanish capital, and as a result, rumours Ronaldo might be unhappy have somewhat lessened.

The Portugal international is the biggest earner in the sport, per Castles, and Real have the financial strength to turn down any offer for their most marketable player. Unless Ronaldo publicly demands a transfer or sits out matches, the Champions League holders won't move him.

A romantic reunion with United might still happen at some point in the future, but it's becoming increasingly unlikely that it will happen in 2015. Unless his situation in Spain takes a turn for the worse in the next few months, don't expect Ronaldo to go anywhere.

Marco Reus

German international Marco Reus is arguably the hottest name on the transfer market, and according to the Daily Star's Colin Harvey, the forward has informed Borussia Dortmund he has no intention of signing a new deal when his current contract expires in 2017.

Reus' current deal carries a buyout clause of £20 million set to activate in the summer of 2015, and Die Schwarzgelben are understandably keen to offer him a new deal that will wipe out any such clause before then.

The 25-year-old and his current club have yet to comment on the rumours, and given Dortmund's rough start to the 2014-15 season, it's not inconceivable the star attacker would be interested in moving to a new club.

According to Harvey, Reus is rumoured to have a deal in place to join Real Madrid, and with the buyout clause looming over the situation, Dortmund could be forced into a sale in January.

Juan Cuadrado

Colombian winger Juan Cuadrado came close to a transfer to United during the summer, and according to the Daily Star's Bruce Archer, a contract dispute with Fiorentina could make him available again in January.

The Colombian currently earns less than £1 million per year and is looking for significantly higher wages, something his current club likely won't be able to offer given Serie A's financial struggles in recent years.

Manchester United addressed the winger position by signing Angel Di Maria, however, and Van Gaal's main concerns are currently on the defensive end and in midfield.

Cuadrado can play as a full-back or wing-back but is far more effective in an attacking role, and with Fiorentina likely still looking for a significant transfer fee, his chances of joining the Red Devils may have passed.
