Justin Rose vs. Hunter Mahan

Kevin Mitchell ofย The Observerย describes Justin Rose as "the backbone" of Europe's rise throughout the competition thus far, an apt term given how reliable the South African native has been in the opening two days.

He takes on Hunter Mahan on Day 3, an opponent who, while yet to reach his optimum in Scotland, has the capacity to derail Rose's current momentum and potentially overcome Europe's biggest threat.

So good has Rose been, in fact, that the home crowds have taken to signing songs of his majestic putting, per BBC Sport's Conor McNamara:

Both competitors may feel slightly beleaguered at this stage, Rose having featured in all four sessions thus far and Mahan the latest three, but that familiarity with Gleneagles could lead to an even finer contest between the two.

Prediction: Justin Rose Wins

Stephen Gallacher vs. Phil Mickelson

It hasn't been the Cinderella story Stephen Gallacher was waiting for these past few days, the only Scotsman in Paul McGinley's group having failed to feature since Friday's opening fourball session.

That being said, Sunday can be a date of redemption for the home hero if he manages to upset the odds and take Phil Mickelson down, a feat which at this juncture looks highly unlikely.

Scottish broadcaster Gerry McCulloch emphasised this very "nothing to lose" mentality, one of the competition's biggest names going up against a relative minnow of the field:

That being said, one doesn't get to this stage in Mickelson's career without having picked up some mental fortitude along the way. The American is sure to be of resolute character with all the pressure on his shoulders and should be able to fend away the challenge.

Prediction: Phil Mickelson Wins

Sergio Garcia vs. Jim Furyk

It's been a tournament of mixed fortunes for Sergio Garcia and Jim Furyk alike, each player having tasted victory and defeat in their opening three sessions.

And that lack of consistency is what adds a very intriguing unpredictability to their clash in particular, making it one of the fixtures worthy of extra attention in a competition where nothing is certain.

The pair actually did battle in Saturday's afternoon foursomes, where it was the Spaniard who emerged as victor alongside partner Rory McIlroy. It wasn't all glamour for Garcia, however, as Betway says he still has more in the tank:

Without McIlroy by his side, the European will be left to his own devices against a player whose pairing with Mahan could only manage two birdies during Saturday's action.

Prediction: Sergio Garcia Wins
