Philadelphia Eagles vs. San Francisco 49ers Betting Odds Analysis and Prediction

OddsShark.comSep 26, 2014

The Philadelphia Eagles are one of just three undefeated teams left in the NFL after the first three weeks, but they will face their toughest test of the young season when they visit the San Francisco 49ers Sunday.

Fortunately for the Eagles, they have enjoyed a lot of past success against San Francisco, winning five of the last six meetings both straight up and against the spread.

Point spread: The 49ers opened as 4.5-point favorites, but the number was climbing. Meanwhile, the total was hovering around 50.5 (line updates and matchup report).

Odds Shark computer prediction: 33.2-29.9 Eagles

Why the Eagles can cover the spread

Even though the Eagles have gotten off to slow starts, they have the offensive firepower to turn a deficit into a lead and cover within minutes thanks to Kelly’s system.

They have also performed well on the road under Kelly, going 6-1 straight up and 5-2 against the spread in their last seven games away from home.

They have shown a knack of beating the 49ers, but face a tough task against a team coming off rare consecutive losses.

Why the 49ers can cover the spread

The 49ers just need to get back to basics, and scoring points in the fourth quarter would probably help as well. San Francisco has been outscored 31-0 in the final 15 minutes of its first three games, negating the team’s fast starts in two of them, which have resulted in losses.

The 49ers led the Chicago Bears 17-0 in Week 2 and the Arizona Cardinals 14-6 last Sunday before allowing them to both come back and earn wins. San Francisco will be playing only its second regular-season game ever at Levi’s Stadium and needs to turn it into a true home-field advantage.

The 49ers will be especially eager to make their fans forget about the loss to the Bears and hand Philadelphia its first loss.

Smart pick

All the positive trends in this game point to one side, and that side is the visiting Eagles. San Francisco has too many negative trends which favor Philadelphia, including the fact that the 49ers are 2-9-2 ATS in their past 13 home games against NFC East opponents.

There’s something about NFC East foes that rattles San Francisco, and the 49ers have also failed to cover four of their last five home games overall. What bettors are seeing with this team early on is how hard it is to maintain the same level of excellence over time.

For this reason, the trendy pick on the Eagles will continue to turn a profit here, and the Odds Shark team has made this one of their Westgate SuperContest predictions for Week 4.

Trends
