Ryder Cup Tee Times 2014: Friday Afternoon Foursomes Revealed
With Friday's fourball play reaching its conclusion at the 2014 Ryder Cup, Team USA and Team Europe have revealed their foursomes pairings and matchups for the afternoon session in Perthshire, Scotland.
Here is a look at the official submissions, courtesy of Sky Sports News:
A few notable pairings from the fourball session will remain intact for foursomes. American captain Tom Watson decided to stick with the duo of Phil Mickelson and Keegan Bradley, along with the Jimmy Walker and Rickie Fowler combination.
Likewise, Europe's Paul McGinley is going with Rory McIlroy and Sergio Garcia as a team in addition to Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson, who handily beat Bubba Watson and Webb Simpson 5 and 4 in fourball.
The Americans got a victory out of rookies Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed in fourball over a pairing that included Ryder Cup dynamo Ian Poulter. Despite that, neither will play in the foursomes session. That comes as a surprise to many, including Jason Sobel of Golf Channel:
Despite the Ryder Cup inexperience of Spieth and Reed, the latter was confident in their form and ability entering Friday's play, per Cameron Morfit of Golf.com. Said Reed:
"I'm excited. I can't wait to get out there and I couldn't have a better teammate. I've played a lot of golf with him, not only as a professional golfer, but junior and amateur golf. I think it's a comforting factor for us and I think we'll go out there and kill it.
"
While the pairing of Mickelson and Bradley was heralded as Team USA's best entering the event, their play has been inconsistent in fourball. Because of that, legendary golf instructor Butch Harmon suggested that Spieth and Reed should have been chosen over them, according to Rex Hoggard of Golf Channel:
Mickelson and Bradley have proved to be a great combination in the past, but there will be a lot of pressure on them to perform against Victor Dubuisson and Graeme McDowell in foursomes.
If they don't, Watson will be very much under fire ahead of Saturday's events.
