After a Memorable British Open, It's Now Off to Canada

Thomas MorelandJul 20, 2009

I, for one, was depressed at the end of the British Open this weekend.

A congratulations is in order for Stewart Cink. He won his first major and made it to the upper echelon of the golfing community.

On the other hand, watching Tom Watson make a poor effort on that final putt and lose was, as he put it himself, gut-wrenching.

All eyes were upon him; the hopes of older guys everywhere went poof like a bubble in the eyes of a child.

What was he thinking when he hit that lackluster putt on the 72nd hole? Did the caddy read the break? Was he thinking at all?

Ah hell, who needs another Open? He has nine majors.

His reputation will not be tarnished in the least because no one expected him to have the lead going into the last hole.  We might have seen a feat that will never be duplicated again in our lifetime.

A golfer nearing his 60s almost beat all the young studs for the whole weekend, including argueably the greatest golfer in the world, Tiger Woods.

On a side note, I would not want to be paired with Woods in the PGA Championship this season. I believe he will bring his best game with him, and this will be his last chance for a major this season.

My Yahoo fantasy golf team took a nose dive this weekend, as almost all my guys missed the cut except for John Daly.

This weekend, I will try to rebound. My "A" player will be the Canadian favorite, Mike Weir, who usually plays well in the Canadian Open.

My "B" players will be Jeff Overton and Steve Marino, who may remain hot. My "C" player will be Luke Donald.

Camilo Villegas, Bob Estes, Bubba Watson, and Daly will be on the bench. I will activate Daly once more if he can make the cut and contend.

I think Daly will win this season, which could make one more great comeback story this season.

Up next on the "rare list," will the Detroit Lions make it to the Super Bowl?

In sports, you never know what may happen.
