Doug Martin's Updated Fantasy Outlook with Mike Glennon as QB

R. Cory SmithSep 25, 2014

Several shakeups for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this week have completely changed the roster ahead of the matchup with the Pittsburgh Steelers. The two most significant, of course, are that Mike Glennon will start at quarterback and share a backfield with Doug Martin.

Currently, the Buccaneers are 0-3 and were ravaged by the Atlanta Falcons, 56-14, in Week 3. While Glennon and Martin might not be the saviors for the Bucs, they can be for fantasy owners in need of a running back this week.

Even when Martin has been on the field he's been underwhelming for owners. During the season opener, Martin rushed nine times for just nine yards, adding another seven yards receiving.

But what Glennon brings is consistency in the passing game. Pack Pride provides a look at Glennon's numbers after he replaced Josh McCown against Atlanta:

This weekend, Martin faces a Steelers defense that has allowed decent points to running backs, averaging 18.07 per game. Pittsburgh is surrendering 130 rushing yards per game and has yet to force a fumble—something Bobby Rainey struggled with against the Falcons.

Martin should get going on the ground but will also be a part of the passing game. During one drive on Thursday night, Glennon checked down to Rainey four times for a total of 41 yards of his 64 yards. Facing the Steelers, Martin should serve as Glennon's security blanket when the pocket's collapsing.

Moving forward, Martin faces some favorable matchups that he should exploit. Don't give up on him too soon with teams like the New Orleans Saints, Minnesota Vikings and Cleveland Browns coming up in the Bucs' next four games.

Fantasy teams have been crushed this week with byes for Marshawn Lynch, Giovani Bernard and Montee Ball. Martin should be a good RB2 for owners in need and run the ball well with more stability in the passing game.
