Yaya Toure then put the game out of reach at 4-0 from the penalty spot. It was given for a foul on Lampard for which Kamil Zayatte was shown a red card.
At this point, the visitors' defence appeared to have given up hope, as they let a completely unmarked Dzeko score his second of the evening with a header from a few yards out:
In the 77th minute, substitute Jose Pozo got in on the act to make it 6-0 by connecting with a Navas cross to give a near carbon copy of Dzeko's first goal:
Deep into injury time, Lampard then finished off the decimation with his second of the evening, a toe poke on an Aleksandar Kolarov cross:
And so the Citizens' defence of their League Cup leads them into the fourth round of the competition.
