AFL Grand Final 2014: Date, Time, Live Stream for Sydney Swans vs. Hawthorn

James DudkoSep 25, 2014

Hawthorn's chances of pushing aside the Sydney Swans in the 2014 AFL grand final could hinge on the fitness of key man Cyril Rioli. The 25-year-old Hawks small forward has been nursing a hamstring injury and is racing to be fit for the final.

If he makes it, Rioli can expect a fierce personal duel with Swans' midfield and forward ace Lewis Jetta. Whichever player outperforms the other will likely settle this final.

Before taking a closer look at those two key figures, here's all of the relevant schedule information:

Rioli Determined to Be Ready for Final

Hawthorn gaffer Alastair Clarkson is prepared to wait as long as possible before making a definitive call on Rioli's match fitness. Clarkson wants to give his star man all the time he needs to try to get ready for the final, according to ABC Grandstand Sport:

"

He's passed a pretty significant test across the weekend but we'll sit down and have a discussion with him, we'll probably speak to Andrew Russell and the medicos.

It's a big, big decision for our football club and he's a very, very special player.

For probably most players we perhaps wouldn't consider it (playing in the grand final) but we're going to run it right to the wire with Cyril because he's a pretty valuable player and he can turn games pretty quickly when he's playing.

"

Clarkson is clearly doing all he can to make sure Rioli will be available and fit enough to make an impact. That's understandable considering his significance to the team.

Whether it's via his boot, his speed or his savvy, Rioli is a vital source of both scoring and creating goals for Hawthorn. Former team skipper Sam Mitchell offered a matter-of-fact summary of whether Rioli should be risked, per Daniel Cherny of The Age: "If we think he can play his role better than whoever's spot he's taking, then he'll play. If we don't think he can do that, then he won't."

While it's difficult to fault Mitchell's logic, there's no doubt the Hawks have a better chance of winning with Rioli on the field rather than stewing on the bench or in the treatment room.

Jetta Ready to Shine Again

Jetta is one player who will pay close to attention to the dilemma involving Rioli. His professional pride will hope his great rival is fit enough to take the field at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

The two have had some thrilling individual battles in this final before. Jetta is ready for another, according to a report in The Sydney Morning Herald.

"I'd love for him to play. We can do Cyril versus Jetts againtake two," Jetta said. "Whether it be me chasing him, or him chasing me, or even having a goal-kicking contest. I think that's what footy needs. I think everyone wants to see it as well."

Although the same report reveals Jetta has been usurped in the Sydney goalscoring charts by the prolific Lance Franklin, the 25-year-old remains an important player for the Swans.

If nothing else, he offers experience of what it's like to win this final, having scampered to victory over the same opposition back in 2012. Sydney won by 10 two years ago, and with Jetta and ex-Hawthorn star Franklin on the field, the Swans will be confident of finding goals again.

The Swans certainly have the firepower to overcome Hawthorn, particularly if Rioli isn't deemed fit enough to play. Without him, a still admittedly deep Hawthorn squad could struggle for enough goals to keep pace with Sydney.
