Cowboys' DeMarco Murray Records 3rd Straight Game with 100 Yards and a Touchdown

Bleacher Report MilestonesSep 22, 2014

Following Sunday's big game against the St. Louis Rams, DeMarco Murray of the Dallas Cowboys became the first player since Curtis Martin in 2004 to start a season by recording at least 100 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown in each of his first three games, per ESPN Stats & Info.

Murray scored his touchdown on a one-yard run in the second quarter and would ultimately finish his day with exactly 100 rushing yards on 24 carries. He previously ran for 118 yards in a Week 1 loss to the San Francisco 49ers following with a 167-yard showing in a Week 2 win over the Tennessee Titans.

Now with 385 rushing yards and 75 carries through three games, Murray leads the NFL in both categories, while his three rushing touchdowns place him even with Mark Ingram, Marshawn Lynch, Giovani Bernard, Knile Davis and Isaiah Crowell for the league lead. Murray, Le'Veon Bell and Justin Forsett are the only players with three carries of 20 yards or more.

According to Pro-Football-Reference.com's play index, there have been 88 instances in NFL history of a player recording three straight games with 100 or more rushing yards and a rushing touchdown. Lynch was the last runner to accomplish the feat, doing so from Dec. 9 to Dec. 23 of the 2012 season.

The record for consecutive games with 100 rushing yards and a rushing score belongs to future Hall of Famer LaDainian Tomlinson, who strung together eight such performances for the San Diego Chargers during his historic 2006 season. That year, Tomlinson set the still-standing NFL records of 28 rushing touchdowns and 31 total touchdowns.

While Murray doesn't figure to come within sniffing distance of either record, he's a real threat to take the league rushing crown while playing behind a dominant Cowboys offensive line.
