The Pittsburgh Steelers lost a number of defenders on Sunday Night Football against the Carolina Panthers, with one of them being starting linebacker Jarvis Jones.
Jones, a second-year player out of Georgia, suffered a wrist injury and had to leave the field, as noted by ESPN.com's Scott Brown:
Burt Lauten of Steelers.com later revealed that Jones' status had been downgraded:
After the Steelers' 37-19 win, Mark Kaboly of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review provided an update on Jones:
Entering the game, Jones had registered 12 total tackles on the season in a redemption effort for a miserable rookie year in which he ranked as the No. 30 3-4 outside linebacker in the NFL on a list that only graded 42 players at Pro Football Focus (subscription required). He seemingly just never wrapped his head fully around the pro game.
Jones was a major presence Sunday before departing, as he had registered two total tackles and a sack to help stifle the Carolina attack.
The Steelers are mightily thin at the position with Jones out of the picture. As the staff did Sunday, it is Arthur Moats who will be called upon to contribute. The veteran out of James Madison spent the first four years of his career with Buffalo before signing on with Pittsburgh this past offseason to little fanfare.
It is an unfortunate turn of events for all involved with Jones seemingly becoming the player the staff had envisioned he would be after taking him with the No. 17 overall pick in the 2013 draft.
For now, that bright future is on hold for an unknown extent of time. In the meantime, the depth of the roster will be put to the test.
