Reggie Bush, Joique Bell's Instant Fantasy Reaction After Week 3

Nate LoopSep 21, 2014

The Detroit Lions look set to continue feeding running backs Reggie Bush and Joique Bell the ball in equal amounts this season, although the former may be the team's better option going forward with the running game spinning its wheels through three weeks of NFL action.

Bush got the lion's share of touches in Week 3 against the Green Bay Packers. With quarterback Matthew Stafford struggling to move the ball downfield, it's a sign that the coaching staff has faith in his dynamic athleticism to bail out the offense.

Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press noted Bush's uptick in touches:

Bush did do a fine job of establishing himself in the passing game with six catches for 38 yards and flashed his speed on a 26-yard touchdown run. Bell gained just 28 yards on 13 carries by the halfway point of the fourth quarter and was shut out of the passing game entirely.

The lack of catches is more a reflection of Stafford's disappointing performance than it is Bell's, so don't shy away from playing Bell when the Lions have the luxury of facing a shaky pass defense.

Bell has struggled to gain any traction on the ground—he averaged 2.2 yards per carry against the Packers—and it looks like Bush may be primed to recapture his lead-tailback status from last season.

Expect Bush to get a few more carries next week and tip the balance slightly in his favor, but don't expect either back to be much more than an RB2 or flex option with the timeshare setup in the Lions' backfield.
