Tips for Betting in the Ryder Cup

Placing a wager is something many golf fans will do leading up to the 2014 Ryder Cup, and finding the right bet could be the difference between earning a hefty return and losing your entire investment.

The key bet is picking the straight-up winner. Team Europe has won five of the last six Ryder Cup events and has the home-course advantage in Scotland. While a 1-2 bet is not typically worth making, Europe’s dominance in this event has been unquestionable over the years.

With Team USA having 9-5 odds to win, placing a wager on the Americans isn’t necessarily the better option considering how dominant the Europeans have been over the last decade (won seven of the last 10 events). If you can bring yourself to place a wager against the United States (it won’t be easy), take the favored Europeans with confidence.

Another common wager is the top performer for each team. For the Americans, there are several players who have been performing at an elite level leading into this event. As much as gamblers will be looking to the red-hot Rickie Fowler, Phil Mickelson with 6-1 odds is the smartest bet.

This will be Mickelson’s 10th time playing in the Ryder Cup. He understands the nuances of the event and has excelled when playing for his nation, winning 14 times in 38 career matches. At 6-1, a healthy wager could yield a big return if the veteran steps up in Scotland.

On the European side, there is no question the favorite to be the highest-scoring player is Rory McIlroy after the best year of his career. After winning the 2014 British Open and PGA Championship, as well as the WGC Bridgestone Invitational, there is no player in the sport with as much momentum as McIlroy.

McIlroy understands the pressure, telling Coleman McDowell of GOLF Magazine about how he embraces it and will thrive despite it:

"

I know I will have a target on my back but I love that and I am going to play up to it as much as I can. It’s a massive compliment whenever the opposition are talking about you. I know what a huge fillip it would be for them if I lose, but it is up to me to make sure it doesn’t happen. I’m a double major champion this year, and it’s important that I embrace that and step up and take on the responsibility.

"

At 4-1 odds, gamblers should be running to the betting window for McIlroy. This is an investment bettors should take each and every time.

Regardless of where you place your wager, make sure to get your bets in before Friday’s action begins. The 2014 Ryder Cup will make for a wild weekend in the golf world.
