Michael Vick A Free Man On Monday

Bryan BrackneyJul 19, 2009

Michael Vick will be free from federal custody on Monday, but he has not yet been reinstated by the NFL. Teams will likely not sign Vick, until he has been reinstated. If Vick is not reinstated, he could look at other leagues like the CFL, UFL, etc.

NFL commissioner Rodger Goodell wants to see genuine remorse from Vick before he reinstates him. Tony Dungy, among others believe that Vick has paid his price and he should be reinstated.

It is unknown if Vick has kept in shape since he was sentenced to hard time, and even if he is reinstated, teams might not think he is football ready, thus he could sit out the 2009 season. A possibility is playing in the UFL to show NFL teams that he is ready for the prime time.

NFL teams would also have to figure out how they use Vick. Do they use him as a quarterback, or do they use him as a utility runner, or even a wide receiver. The Dolphins would seem to be a great fit since they use the "wildcat", but the have already invested in Pat White.

A team like the Cowboys might want his talent, but they let go of big distractions like Tank Johnson, Terrell Owens, and Pacman Jones, and it seems like they are keeping a drama free summer thus far.

New England is said to be an option. In the past, The Patriots have kept the egos of Corey Dillon and Randy Moss in check, but Michael Vick might be too much to handle for a team that tries to go under the radar.

The UFL is very open to Michael Vick, but Vick might not want to play in a smaller league. Were Vick to sign with a UFL team, he could probably make the same amount of money Vick would if Vick signed a veteran minimum contract.

The 49ers could look to add Vick. Were Vick to sign with San Francisco, the 49ers might decide to keep him at quarterback, and let him start there. Alex Smith and Shaun Hill are probably just as good at passing, but Vick adds much value as a runner.
