Aston Villa vs. Arsenal: Winners and Losers from Premier League Game
Arsenal responded to their Champions League hammering at Dortmund with an emphatic victory at Villa Park.
With Villa ravaged by a virus, Arsenal proved too much for Paul Lambert's side. Remarkably, the Gunners grabbed three goals in three first-half minutes to put the game to bed.
Go to the next slide to the discover who were the major winners and losers in this Premier League clash.
Winner: Mesut Ozil
1 of 5
Restored to his preferred central role, Mesut Ozil was in excellent form at Villa Park.
In the space of one minute and 19 seconds, Ozil scored one goal and created another. Those two moments were enough to swing the game irrevocably in Arsenal's favour.
The timing couldn't be better: Next week, Arsenal face rivals Spurs in the north London derby. A match-winning contribution in that game would silence any remaining critics.
Winner: Danny Welbeck
2 of 5
Danny Welbeck will be absolutely delighted to have opened his Arsenal account. He met Mesut Ozil's perfectly-weighted pass with a thunderous finish into the roof of the net.
However, this performance was about so much more than just the goal. He worked tirelessly for the team, and created Ozil's opener with a superb through-ball.
Winner: Wojciech Szczesny
3 of 5
Not only did Wojciech Szczesny finish the game with a clean sheet, but he also made a superb save at 0-0 which might have changed the course of the game.
When Ciaran Clark found himself unmarked from a set-piece just a few yards out, Villa Park rose in anticipation of a goal. However, Szczesny produced an athletic star-jump to block the header and keep the scoreline level. It was a vital save for Arsenal.
Loser: Carlos Sanchez
4 of 5
Handed a surprise start due to the withdrawal of Ashley Westwood with illness, Carlos Sanchez really struggled with the pace of the game.
Sanchez will need to adapt swiftly to avoid more similarly inept performances in the immediate future.
Loser: Aaron Ramsey
5 of 5
Although Aaron Ramsey's deeper role alongside Mikel Arteta helped Arsenal seize control of the midfield, he will be disappointed with his individual display.
Ramsey's passing was wayward and his touch heavy. Thus far in 2014/15 he has failed to recapture his glorious form of last season.
