LSU Football Recruiting: Latest Updates on 2015 Commits, Visits and Targets
LSU will begin its SEC season against Mississippi State on Saturday night. Though head coach Les Miles and his coaching staff are focused on defeating the Bulldogs, they always keep an eye on recruiting.
Miles currently has 15 commits in the 2015 class, which ranks him 12th nationally and seventh in the SEC. The Tigers have not finished outside the top 10 since 2012.
LSU fans should not be alarmed with the current ranking, as it is still early in the recruiting process. The Tigers are the only school in the top 15 with 15 or less commitments, which means there is still plenty of room for the class to grow.
Here is a breakdown of the latest on LSU's recruiting trail.
Latest Commitments
1 of 5LSU has not had a commitment for the 2015 class in over a month, but that can likely change as official visits become more frequent in the fall.
The Tigers' latest snag was 3-star tight end Bry’Keithon Mouton, who committed on August 1. They had a productive July when 3-star offensive tackle Matt Womack and 4-star cornerback Xavier Lewis pledged their loyalty to LSU.
Latest Visits
2 of 5
LSU will have a massive guest list of uncommitted recruits on Saturday night. The group features high profile playmakers Tyron Johnson and Donte Jackson, per Shea Dixon of Geaux247.com (subscription required).
Some players already committed to the Tigers will also be in attendance, including 4-star 2015 talents Nick Brossette, Derrius Guice, Jazz Ferguson and Lewis. The Times-Picayune's James Smith has the full list of in-state prospects that will be there, which you can find here.
Damarkus Lodge?
3 of 5The biggest recruiting news of the week was 4-star receiver Damarkus Lodge renouncing his commitment from Texas A&M, per Taylor Hamm of Gigem247.com.
Texas A&M appears to still be in the lead for Lodge's services, with Baylor in a close second. But Dixon pointed out Lodge's quarterback Justin McMillan is currently an LSU commit, which could help Miles snag the 6'2" pass-catcher. The 247Sports Crystal Ball Projection has the Tigers behind the Aggies and the Bears.
Lodge would provide some depth to LSU's receiving corps. He is not a must, though, as the Tigers brought in four talented pass-catchers in the 2014 class and already has a commitment from Ferguson for 2015.
Flip from Matt Womack?
4 of 5
Alabama head coach Nick Saban offered LSU 3-star offensive tackle commitment Matt Womack a place last weekend in Tuscaloosa, per Courtney Cronin of The Clarion-Ledger. Womack, who has camped at Alabama the last three offseasons, could easily flip to the Crimson Tide.
Womack has already signed a financial aid agreement with LSU, but the Tigers will not honor it for the threat of recruiting violations after rule changes last April.
Womack is not a must-need for Alabama or LSU, as both already have a slew of offensive line commitments. Nevertheless, the 6'7" prospect's offer list shows he's wanted throughout the SEC.
Push for 2016
5 of 5
LSU currently has three 2016 commits, all of which are 4-star playmakers on the offensive side of the ball. The Tigers will look to add to that number in the coming weeks.
Tre Turner, a 4-star running back out of New Orleans, already has an offer from Georgia, per Geaux247.com's Sonny Shipp. LSU might soon follow suit, as Turner will be in attendance for LSU's game against Mississippi State on Saturday night.
Powerful offensive line 2016 target Willie Allen will be alongside Turner to watch the Bulldogs face the Tigers. The 6'7" Allen already has an offer from LSU, but he said he is in no rush to make a decision, per James Smith of The Times-Picayune.
