Eddie Hearn Rubbishes Floyd Mayweather vs. Amir Khan Talk, Eyes Kell Brook Fight

Amir Khan has recently been touted as the next in line to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. after the American's Saturday victory over Marcos Maidana in Las Vegas.

According to Dan Rafael on ESPN.com, Money has only two fights left before retirement. The first of those is likely to be against Khan, after Mayweather's father and trainer, Floyd Sr., said the Briton was "No. 1 on the list," per Boxing News 24 (h/t Sky Sports).

Khan would no doubt relish the opportunity to take on the boxing great—who has 47 wins in 47 fights—and seems confident of his ability to challenge Mayweather, per Sky Sports:

"

After seeing him win I believe I will beat him. Floyd, as we all know, isn't the biggest puncher. His footwork has slowed down, he only throws single punches and gets hit a lot more. We all know Maidana isn't the quickest, and he still got through with shots.

"

However, British boxing promoter Eddie Hearn, writing in his column for the Daily Mail, is sceptical about a potential Mayweather-Khan bout and believes the Bolton fighter should instead line up an all-British affair with Kell Brook:

"

I said around a year ago I didn’t think Floyd would fight Amir Khan in May. He didn’t. I also said he wouldn’t fight Amir in September. He didn’t. I’m now saying he won’t fight Amir next May. Now, I understand that everyone wants that fight but there also comes a time when you have to stop hanging around and prostituting yourself for a shot when you have an opportunity to give the British public what they want in a huge all-British clash with Kell Brook for the world title.

"

Brook is the current IBF welterweight world champion after his stunning majority-decision victory over Shawn Porter in California last month.

The 28-year-old from Sheffield is undefeated in 33 fights, and a fight with Khan would certainly generate a lot of excitement in Britain, especially in the wake of May's Wembley bout between Carl Froch and George Groves.

However, Brook was recently the victim of a shocking attack while on holiday in Tenerife earlier this month, when he was stabbed in the leg, per Bleacher Report U.K.:

Hearn reports that Brook is now on the mend, and a return is being mooted for February or March of 2015, potentially against Khan.

The two English fighters are historically not the best of friends, per Sky Sports, and a matchup between the pair would be a mouth-watering prospect while also still providing a steppingstone to Mayweather, per FightNights.com:

Froch's victory over Groves showed there is a huge appetite for national rivals facing off on home soil in Britain, and there would likely be a great deal of hype for Hearn's proposed fight.

It would be a big night for British boxing and its fans while also providing an international interest, as the victor would surely be set for a fight with Mayweather.

However, if Khan believes he's close to a huge payday against Mayweather, it would be a giant risk to meet Brook first, since a defeat would end any hope of facing the brilliant American.
