Bettor Misses out on $100,000 as a Result of Eagles' Comeback over Colts

Kyle NewportSep 17, 2014

As upset as some Indianapolis Colts fans may have been at their team for losing to the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday night, none of them should be as mad as one Delaware bettor.

According to ESPN.com's David Purdum, a bettor narrowly missed out on $100,000 after doing a $5, 15-team parlay card. Just how close was he to getting a nice pile of cash? All he needed was for the the Colts beat the Eagles by three points. Considering Indianapolis had a 14-point lead late in the third quarter, the pick was looking good.

Unfortunately, turnovers and controversial officiating led to a Colts loss. Philadelphia rallied to tie the game in the third quarter and won on a 36-yard field goal as time expired. The 30-27 loss left Indianapolis fans upset and one bettor heartbroken.

Here's what Delaware Lottery director Vernon Kirk had to say about the situation, per Purdum:

"

Honestly, we were rooting for the guy, starting with Sunday night's game. Our risk manager told us Sunday night that only one person had hit 14 games and needed the Bears and Colts.

It definitely looked like Delaware had a winner when the Colts were up 14 midway through the third quarter. Then to have the Eagles rally like that -- and to win in the last three seconds of the game -- it was agonizing to watch when you knew one player was so close to such a big payout.

"

Purdum provided some interesting notes about the $5, 15-team parlay card: "No one has hit one of the 15-team, $5 parlays since 2011. The odds of picking all 15 games correctly are roughly 32,000-to-1, according to the lottery."

Picking 15 games against the spread is obviously no easy task, so the fact that the bettor had $100,000 within his reach up until the final snap of the week had to be devastating.

When the Chicago Bears rallied from a 17-point deficit to beat the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday night, the bettor had to feel like it was meant to be. Once the Colts took a 20-6 lead, he had to be putting some champagne on ice.

Then, just like that, he saw the money disappear before his very eyes.
