Dolph Ziggler Losing to The Miz at Night of Champions Would Be a Mistake

Sharon GlencrossSep 17, 2014

At Night of Champions, let's hope the WWE booking team makes the correct decision and allows Dolph Ziggler to retain his Intercontinental Championship in his match against The Miz.

OK, so it's easy to see why some fans would want to see Ziggler lose the belt. The Miz's current Hollywood character is entertaining and well-performed—and it has given The Miz's career a much-needed boost and provided a regular role for the underused Damien Sandow.

Considering all the WWE stars who have gotten into acting over the years—The Rock, Dave Batista, Steve Austin and even The Miz himself—the wrestler-turned-Hollywood-actor character feels shockingly relevant. You even have to wonder if the company is using this gimmick as a dig at some of those guys.

However, I'd argue that The Miz's current act is such a success that he simply doesn't need the belt to get or remain over. Ziggler, however, does.

It's been a rough couple of years for Ziggler.

Following his short run with the World Heavyweight Championship in the spring of 2013, he fell back to midcard soon after and went from one meaningless program to another. It was sad to see his immense talent squandered, but it seemed like the bookers lost faith in him for whatever reason.

This current feud with The Miz—and his title win last month at SummerSlam—has been the only thing to allow him to return to relevance in recent times. His babyface character is rather likable too.

It’s hard to see him main eventing again or winning the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, but he’s in a solid and decent spot.

That is more than a lot of the guys on the roster have right now.

Taking the title off of him at Night of Champions would undo all the good work WWE has done with him recently and send him back to square one. It could be a setback he might never recover from.

It would also be detrimental for the Intercontinental Championship. If the belt is ever going to return to its former glory, someone has to have a lasting and relevant run with it. Switching it back and forth will just remind people of why they stopped taking it seriously in the first place.

Keeping the belt on Ziggler and having him hold it for another few months would help bring back some of its credibility.

Of course, just because WWE’s booking team should do this doesn’t necessarily mean it will. Considering how badly it has treated the rest of the midcard, it wouldn’t be too much of a surprise to see Ziggler join the list too.
