Ranking Europe's Top Clubs on Their 2014 Summer Transfer Window Deals
If you want to keep up with the movers and shakers of European football, read this slideshow, which will power rank AC Milan, Arsenal, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea, Juventus, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid, Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur based on their summer transfer window.
The transfer activity of the clubs will be subjectively ranked via two key factors:
- Economic efficiency of the transfer.
- Transferred footballer's quality.
15. Paris Saint-Germain

| David Luiz | Chelsea | €49.5/£39.2M |
| Serge Aurier | Toulouse | Loan |
David Luiz, 27, is a hit-and-miss centre-back who showed his true colours in Brazil's 7-1 defeat to Germany at the FIFA World Cup semi-finals.
Seven years ago, he played under the name David Marinho during the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup. Now we know why he was excluded from the outstanding players list, per FIFA.
Serge Aurier, 21, can play right-back, centre-back and right wing-back. Outstanding going forward, the Ivorian could be moved upfield later in his career, a la Gareth Bale.

| Marcos Rojo | Sporting Lisbon | €20/£15.9M |
| Daley Blind | Ajax | €17.6/£14M |
| Radamel Falcao | Monaco | Loan |
Angel Di Maria, 26, is the perfect player for fantasy Premier League. The Argentine international is always looking to make piercing passes and is active in possession, averaging 54.5 passes per game. He has the quality to record 15-20 assists in league play this season.
Luke Shaw, 19, showed up at Manchester United unfit, per ESPN, which was an awful first impression to make on manager Louis van Gaal. The English left-back will need several seasons under his belt before people make a definitive judgement on him being a success or a flop.
Ander Herrera, 25, is an all-round Spanish midfielder who is a scoring threat, creative outlet, dribbler and wins back possession.
Marcos Rojo, 24, was one of Argentina's best players at the FIFA World Cup. While there have been questions over his status as an elite footballer, he has settled in well.
Daley Blind, 24, relies on being in position and his high football IQ. The Dutch utility player suits Van Gaal's system.
Radamel Falcao, 28, is an exorbitant signing, but it makes United one of the must-watch teams in Europe. United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward's hero must be Real president Florentino Perez.

| Claudio Bravo | Real Sociedad | €12/£9.5M |
| Marc-Andre ter Stegen | Borussia Monchengladbach | €12/£9.5M |
| Douglas Pereira | Sao Paulo | €4/£3.2M |
Luis Suarez, 27, has baggage but the Uruguayan remains one of the best footballers in the world.
Jeremy Mathieu, 30, is a modest professional who is tall, passes well and experienced. But he is not a €20 million-rated defender.
Thomas Vermaelen, 28, has no match fitness, and his injury record is a red flag. The Belgian could end up being a Gabriel Milito-like purchase.
Ivan Rakitic, 26, is one of the best signings of the summer transfer window. He is a world-class midfielder, so to sign him for €18 million is a great bit of business. He is currently averaging 96.3 passes for Barca.
Claudio Bravo, 31, has a great track record for Chile and Real Sociedad. However, he is prone to unforced errors and is not a world-class goalkeeper.
Marc-Andre ter Stegen, 22, could be Germany's future No. 1 and should win Barcelona's No. 1 position easily.
Douglas: Don't know enough about him.

| Toni Kroos | Bayern Munich | €25/£19.8M |
| Keylor Navas | Levante | €10/£7.9M |
| Javier Hernandez | Manchester United | Loan |
James Rodriguez, 23, was Colombia's best player at the FIFA World Cup, scoring six times. But he is in the zone when it comes to creating goals, which is what Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale expect.
Toni Kroos, 24, is averaging 74.3 passes per game in La Liga, and the German is a deep-lying playmaking threat.
Keylor Navas, 27, is one of the best goalkeepers in the world, whereas Iker Casillas is in decline. The Costa Rican deserves a starting run in the first team.
Chicharito, 26, went from one bench to another. The Mexico international needs to consider signing for a mid-tier European club where he will play week in, week out.

| Adam Lallana | Southampton | €31.6/£25M |
| Dejan Lovren | Southampton | €25.3/£20M |
| Lazar Markovic | Benfica | €25.3/£20M |
| Alberto Moreno | Sevilla | €15.1/£12M |
| Emre Can | Bayer Leverkusen | €12.31/£9.75M |
| Divock Origi | Lille | €12.7/£10M |
| Rickie Lambert | Southampton | €5.1/£4M |
| Javier Manquillo | Atletico Madrid | Loan |
Mario Balotelli, 24, is a troubled Italian centre-forward, but he finished marvellously against Ludogorets Razgrad. It is a last chance saloon for Balotelli at a major European club, so it is imperative he plays well.
From a talent perspective, he represents far better value for money than Arsenal spending €20.2/£16 million on Danny Welbeck.
Adam Lallana, 26, is a technician and was a great footballer at Southampton, but the Englishman is overpriced as a £25 million-valued midfielder.
Dejan Lovren, 25, resembles more of the Lyon Lovren than the Southampton Lovren at Liverpool. The Croatian international played his worst football at Lyon, so he needs to up his game at Liverpool.
Lazar Markovic, 20, is a fleet-footed Serbian footballer who can go on long dribbles. He may take a season or two before he finally shows his full potential.
Emre Can, 20, is a complete midfielder who can charge past opposing players and consistently win back the ball. However, the German will be out injured for the foreseeable future.
Divock Origi, 19, is a promising Belgian centre-forward who has scored two goals and registered an assist in four games on loan at Lille this season.
Rickie Lambert, 32, is living his boyhood dream of playing for Liverpool. The Englishman needs to at least threaten the goals when he is subbed on.
Javier Manquillo, 20, was a backup to Juanfran last season. On loan at Liverpool, the Spanish right-back looks like one of the loans of the season.

| Federico Fazio | Sevilla | €10.1/£8M |
| Benjamin Stambouli | Montpellier | €5.9/£4.7M |
| Eric Dier | Sporting Lisbon | €5/£4M |
| DeAndre Yedlin | Seattle Sounders | €3.2/£2.5M |
Ben Davies, 21, was involved in an uncommon €12.7/£10 million-valued trade with Gylfi Sigurdsson, per David Hytner at The Guardian. The Welsh left-back provides real competition to Danny Rose.
Federico Fazio, 27, is an imposing Argentine centre-back, though he makes too many errors.
However, Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino turned Dejan Lovren from one of the worst Ligue 1 defenders into an elite defender at Southampton. Could it be the same with Fazio?
Benjamin Stambouli, 24, leads by example and will provide added reinforcement to Pochettino's midfield.
Eric Dier, 20, is one of the shrewdest summer transfer steals. Rock solid at the back, and given that he is English, he stands to make Spurs a big profit if they opt to sell him.
DeAndre Yedlin: Haven't seen enough of him, but he flashed moments of brilliance for the United States at the FIFA World Cup.

| Roberto Pereyra | Udinese | Loan |
| Romulo | Hellas Verona | Loan |
| Kingsley Coman | Paris Saint-Germain | Free Transfer |
Alvaro Morata, 21, has yet to make a lasting impression at Juventus, but he did score a hat-trick in a friendly game. When the Spaniard is fully fit, expect him to be firing on all cylinders
Stefano Sturaro, 21, has upside as an incisive passer, but he needs to work on retaining possession.
Patrice Evra, 33, lacks the dynamism of Kwadwo Asamoah. However, being an experienced Frenchman, Evra can help guide Paul Pogba and Coman.
Roberto Pereyra, 23, is a technically gifted Argentine who glides past opposing players. He can also split open defences having accumulated six assists last season.
Romulo, 27, is a high IQ Brazilian footballer who helps team cohesiveness. Last season, he was overshadowed by Juan Iturbe, Jorginho and Luca Toni.
Kingsley Coman, 18, was a livewire in Juventus' 1-0 win over Chievo Verona. Is the Frenchman another Pogba-esque Bosman win for Juve?
8. Manchester City

| Eliaquim Mangala | Porto | €40.1/£32M |

| Willy Caballero | Malaga | €7.6/£6M |
| Bruno Zuculini | Racing Club | €1.9/£1.5M |
| Bacary Sagna | Arsenal | Free Transfer |
| Frank Lampard | New York City | Loan |
Eliaquim Mangala, 23, is as inconsistent as David Luiz. With Mangala, it's either a 9/10 or 2/10 performance. There are so many errors from the French international centre-back that it is inconceivable his transfer stock rose to £32 million.
Fernando, 27, is an underrated Brazilian defensive midfielder, who would have received more plaudits if he was English. His positioning is excellent and he is a passing outlet in midfield (completes 92.7 percent of his 50 passes per game).
Willy Caballero, 32, proved his worth at Malaga. The Argentine is a better goalkeeper than Joe Hart, who has been on a downhill spiral.
Bruno Zuculini: Don't know enough about him.
Bacary Sagna, 31, is essentially semi-retired, given he will be spending most of this season on the bench.
Frank Lampard, 36, is one of the greatest Premier League footballers ever. In the twilight of his career, his goal is now to spread the world game in the United States, where it is a minority sport.

| Danny Welbeck | Manchester United | €20.2/£16M |
| Mathieu Debuchy | Newcastle United | €15.2/£12M |
| David Ospina | Nice | €4/£3.2M |
Alexis Sanchez, 25, routinely breaks open opposing defences with his skill, trickery and technical prowess. The Chile international's goal in a 2-2 draw against Manchester City was amazing.
Calum Chambers, 19, is composed on the ball and versatile. Signed as a right-back, the English international looks class as a centre-back and has the traits to be a defensive midfielder. The only concern is: what if he is pigeon-holed into a utility role?
Danny Welbeck, 23, could be Arsenal's answer to Daniel Sturridge. Both English footballers had their development stunted due to being shifted out wide. In reality, both are No. 9s.
Mathieu Debuchy, 29, is a serviceable right-back. However, the French international's ankle ligament damage opens up the chance for either Chambers, or Hector Bellerin.
David Ospina, 26, will get his chance because Wojciech Szczesny goes through patches of inconsistent play. One of Colombia's best goalkeepers in recent memory, Arsenal signed Ospina as an economically efficient transfer fee.

| Alex | Paris Saint-Germain | Free Transfer |
| Diego Lopez | Real Madrid | Free Transfer |
| Jeremy Menez | Paris Saint-Germain | Free Transfer |
| Michael Agazzi | Chievo Verona | Free Transfer |
Giacomo Bonaventura, 25, is a direct and incisive left-sided Italian who needs to be more productive to justify a regular starting position at AC Milan.
Adil Rami, 28, is an experienced French centre-back who can shore up Milan's defence. Given how shambolic the defending was in a 5-4 win over Parma, expect Rami to be afforded an extended starting run.
Fernando Torres, 30, has a point to prove after an Andriy Shevchenko-like spell at Chelsea. The issue for the Spaniard is Shevchenko carried his terrible form with him to Milan.
Marco van Ginkel, 21, was lost in the shuffle after his long-term injury and Chelsea's packed midfield. The Dutch international has the ability to transition into an elite box-to-box midfielder.
Pablo Armero, 27, was a one-season wonder after a world-class 2011-12 season, in which he created 10 goals. The Colombian has not even reached five assists since.
Alex, 32, is a physical Brazilian centre-back who provides an aerial presence for Milan.
Diego Lopez, 32, is generally always a reliable goalkeeper, but the Spaniard was awful in the 5-4 win over Parma. He should still be at Real Madrid, given Iker Casillas should have been sold on form.
Jeremy Menez, 27, is playing the best football of his career. The French centre-forward has already scored three times in his opening two Serie A games.
Michael Agazzi, 30, was projected to be a starter prior to the signing of Lopez. While Agazzi has the prototypical height, the Italian does not inspire confidence.

| Graziano Pelle | Feyenoord | €11.4/£9M |
| Florin Gardos | Steaua Bucharest | €7.6/£6M |
| Toby Alderweireld | Atletico Madrid | Loan |
| Ryan Bertrand | Chelsea | Loan |
Sahne Long, 27, is a selfless and dedicated forward. But the Irishman is distinctively average and is not even worth a quarter of his transfer value.
Sadio Mane: Don't know much about him.
Dusan Tadic, 25, scored 16 times and created 14 goals last season. The Serbian has the potential to be a big hit in the Premier League.
Fraser Forster, 26, is a giant and has the tangibles to develop into a world-class goalkeeper. He should be England's No. 1.
Graziano Pelle, 29, previously failed to make it in Serie A. But the Italian is in a great position to succeed being able to work with Ronald Koeman, who was instrumental in Pelle's success at Feyenoord.
Florin Gardos: Don't know much about him.
Toby Alderweireld, 25, was never given a fair chance at Atleti. The Belgian can slot in at right-back and centre-back, which will be useful for Koeman.
Ryan Bertrand, 25, has the Southampton left-back slot to himself. If the Englishman's defending was more reliable, he would be a quality defender.

| Jesus Gamez | Malaga | €2.5/£2M |
| Emiliano Velazquez | Danubio | €1.1M/£870K |
| Cristian Ansaldi | FC Zenit | Loan |
Antoine Griezmann, 23, scored 16 times in La Liga last season, and his career is on the rise. If the French international continues to develop, he will be sold for a substantial profit in the future.
Mario Mandzukic, 28, is a proven scorer and can fill the void left by Diego Costa.
Alessio Cerci, 27, is a peculiar signing because the Italian international shirks his defensive duties. That said, he possesses expansive vision and registered 10 assists in Serie A last season.
Jan Oblak, 21, is a once-in-a-generation goalkeeper, but Benfica claiming Atletico Madrid attempted to sell the Slovenian back, per Luis Aznar and Kike Sampedro at Marca, suggests there was divide between Atleti management in signing Oblak.
Raul Jimenez, 23, is a rough diamond. Atleti are famed for their world-class centre-forwards, so the Mexican needs time.
Guilherme Siqueira, 28, is brilliant in attack, but his defending can be horrifically bad. He is more suited to a wing-back role.
Angel Correa: Don't know enough about him.
Miguel Angel Moya, 30, is Atleti's No. 1 and is proving his doubters wrong with important clutch saves. The Spaniard is keeping Oblak on the outer.
Jesus Gamez, 29, is an experienced right-back who has played 111 La Liga games in his last four seasons. He will be a solid backup to Juanfran.
Cristian Ansaldi, 27, had a strong game in a 3-2 defeat to Olympiacos. The Argentine left-back created a goal, made four tackles and intercepted six passes.

| Nuri Sahin | Real Madrid | €7/£5.5M |
| Ji Dong-Won | Augsburg | Free Transfer |
Ciro Immobile, 24, scored 22 Serie A goals last season. The Italian international's solo goal against Arsenal suggests he could emulate Robert Lewandowski's achievements.
Adrian Ramos, 28, scored as a super sub in a 3-2 win over Augsburg and found the back of the net as a starter in a 3-1 win over Freiburg. Brilliant business from Borussia Dortmund to have the Colombian international as an option for both roles.
Matthias Ginter, 20, is able to play as a centre-back or shield the back four as a defensive midfielder. While the Germany international has high upside, he is prone to making positional mistakes.
Shinji Kagawa, 25, may have scored against Freiburg, but he was not as involved as he should have been. Granted, it will take the Japanese international time to get back to the world-class standard he was playing at prior to signing with Manchester United.
Nuri Sahin, 26, faces another barrier to his career in recovering from knee surgery. The Turkish international then needs to win back his starting position, which is not guaranteed.
Ji Dong-Won, 23, is content with being a squad player, which is not going to help the South Korean make strides in his career. He should be playing regular football for a smaller Bundesliga team.

Mehdi Benatia, 27, was one of the best centre-backs in Europe's elite leagues last season. However, the Moroccan international left Roma on irreconcilable terms, accused of being "poisonous," per FIFA.
There are always two sides to the story.
Benatia forced his move to Bayern Munich, a team with dynastic potential, and Roma were bitter at losing a world-class defender.
Juan Bernat, 21, has superb recovery speed and can take the ball past opposing players off the dribble. The Spaniard's combination with David Alaba is electric.
Xabi Alonso, 32, has pedigree, having represented Spain over 100 times, and his CV is littered with trophies. But the Spaniard will be taking up Gianluca Gaudino's minutes.
Gaudino completes 94.2 percent of his passes, is technically flawless, can dribble out of a tight situation and possesses immense upside as a 17-year-old.
Pepe Reina, 32, is a big-name reserve. The Spaniard will be earning cheques watching Manuel Neuer keep goal.
Sinan Kurt: Don't know enough about him.
Robert Lewandowski, 26, is one of the best No. 9s in the game. The Polish international has three successive seasons of 20 goals or more in the Bundesliga. He will be key to Bayern's success.
Sebastian Rode, 23, was an elite midfielder at Eintracht Frankfurt, and the German bolsters Bayern's squad depth.

Diego Costa, 25, has enjoyed a meteoric rise because of his hard work and dedication. The Brazil-born Spain international is as prolific as Jimmy Greaves was.
Cesc Fabregas, 27, assists Costa on (goals) and off the field (translator). Given Mesut Ozil's struggles at Arsenal, it is fortunate Fabregas can call upon his seven previous seasons of Premier League experience for Arsenal.
Filipe Luis, 29, is a world-class left-back, who needs time before he lives up to his reputation. Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho operates on form, not reputation. Once Luis gets a chance, he needs to take advantage of it. Until then, he will be a spectator.
Loic Remy, 27, has noted fitness issues, therefore it is a risk to have a backup centre-forward with questions surrounding his durability.
Mario Pasalic, 19, is on loan at Elche (will compile a mid-term loan report on him). First impressions: underwhelming. Still, it's only early days.
Didier Drogba, 36, was brought back to help team cohesion. Symbolic signing, but hopefully he can chip in with a few priceless goals.
