Colin Kaepernick's Instant Fantasy Reaction After Week 2

Nate LoopSep 14, 2014

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick had a rough outing in the team's Week 2 loss to the Chicago Bears, but he remains a viable fantasy football option despite the turnover-riddled performance on his home turf.

Take a look at the fourth-year quarterback's final numbers against the Bears:

The interception numbers aren't pretty—you can partially thank the daring exploits of Bears safety Chris Conte for that—and the loss is disconcerting. Still, Kaepernick tends to be more accurate than he was on Sunday night in front of a national television audience.

NFL Network's Andrew Siciliano pointed out that Kaepernick was on a fine streak of taking care of the football before Sunday night's game:

Kaepernick did pad his fantasy totals with a few nice runs against the Bears defense.

Niners fans won't care how much he runs the ball if he can't close out victories, but this aspect of his game should alleviate the concerns of most fantasy football owners.

Kaepernick ran for 524 yards and four touchdowns last season, and he already has 77 rushing yards after two weeks of play in 2014. He is unlikely to put up a ton of turnovers after throwing just eight interceptions in 2013, but there is some cause for concern if he is throwing the ball more often this season.

However, the added fantasy points on the ground will help negate the impact of any possible uptick in turnovers in most standard-scoring leagues.

That leaves fantasy managers with a solid passer throwing to targets like tight end Vernon Davis and wide receivers Michael Crabtree and Anquan Boldin.

Head coach Jim Harbaugh has installed an aggresive defense in Northern California, so expect Kaepernick to get his opportunities to put up big numbers every now and then.

Whether or not Kaepernick proves to be a winning quarterback isn't of the greatest concern to fantasy football owners. It's his deadly combination of foot speed and arm strength that matters.
