Bengals' Mohamed Sanu Accomplishes Rare Double Feat

Bleacher Report MilestonesSep 15, 2014

Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Mohamed Sanu had a big afternoon in Sunday's 24-10 win over the Atlanta Falcons, recording a 76-yard touchdown reception among his three catches and also completing a 50-yard pass on a trick play.

Per ESPN Stats & Info, the former college quarterback out of Rutgers became the first player since David Patten for the New England Patriots in 2001 to record a pass of 50 or more yards and reception of 50 or more yards in the same game.

Sanu's completion wasn't the wide-open throw you'd expect a receiver to make, as he instead tossed a perfect ball down the sideline to beat double coverage, finding fellow wideout Brandon Tate for a 50-yard gain. The beautiful pass set up an unsuccessful 38-yard field-goal attempt for Bengals kicker Mike Nugent in what was then a 3-3 game.

Sanu would later take advantage of a rare eight-man blitz to beat Falcons cornerback Robert Alford for a 76-yard touchdown reception that put the Bengals up 17-3 in the third quarter.

Sanu finished his day with three catches for 86 yards and a touchdown, acting as the Bengals' default No. 1 wide receiver after A.J. Green left with a foot injury. Marvin Jones, who was expected to open the season as Cincinnati's No. 2 wideout, is already sidelined due to a broken foot.

Sanu has seven catches for 120 yards and a touchdown through two games, though he's drawn only nine targets, in spite of the Bengals' mounting injury issues at his position.

Selected in the third round of the 2012 NFL draft, Sanu has now completed exactly one pass on one attempt in each of his three NFL seasons. He threw a 73-yard touchdown strike as a rookie, and then completed his only pass for 25 yards last season. All in all, he has three completions on three career attempts, with 148 yards and a touchdown.

According to pro-football-reference.com's play index, there have only been 12 instances since 1960 of a player recording 50 or more receiving yards and 50 or more passing yards in one game. The list, which notably includes Hall of Fame running back Walter Payton and eventual head coach Dan Reeves, does not have any repeat performers.
