A Legend Comes To An End As 106.7 WJFK Becomes 106.7 The Fan

Josh McCainJul 17, 2009

This article may not mean much to those of you outside of the Washington D.C. area, but today was the final day of a Legendary Talk Radio station that once was 106.7 WJFK.  Starting Monday a large market like D.C. will get only its second all sports radio station.  106.7 The Fan (as WJFK will now be called) will be in direct competition with Redskins' owner Dan Snyder's ESPN 980.

The Fan's line-up will feature The Sports Junkies on the morning drive.  These are four local guys who were also WJFK's morning drive team, so there is no change there.  The mid-day show will consist of Mike Wise from the Washington Post and ex-Redskin Bill Rohland.  The new afternoon drive will feature another ex-Redskin Lavar Arrington and former WJFK mid-day host Chad Dukes.

This is a new error in D.C. sports talk radio, the area now has a sports station that isn't owned by the very unpopular Redskins' owner.  One can only hope for a very unbiased approached to the area's favorite team.

As a Redskins' fan I am excited about a new station not tied to the team and hope for newer opinions that don't feel filtered.  However, this excitement comes with a heavy heart as WJFK was very much apart of this town.  Shows like the Big O and Dukes and the Mike O'Mara Show will be sorely missed.  As I listened to the sign off today of the Big O and Dukes Show (the last live local show to air today) I couldn't help but to get misty eyed.  It felt like losing a close friend.  This Monday I look forward to 106.7 The Fan and for those interested I will be posting a follow up article on how the new Sports Station did on their first day.

As I close this article I want to take this opportunity to thank all those hosts of WJFK and let them know that their shows are going to be missed.  Thanks to the Junkies (Cakes, Bickle, JP, and Lurch), Big O and Dukes (Oscar, Chad, and Drab) and a special thanks to the legend Mike O'Mara (Mike, Buzz, Rob, and Beth Anne).  Thank you guys for one hell of a way to get through my work day.
