Panthers.com's Bryan Strickland has the latest on Williams from head coach Ron Rivera:

"

It's encouraging to have him back on the field. Anytime you get a guy back off the injury list, it's awesome.

DeAngelo looked good today. Darrin Reaves looked good today. We'll go from there.

We're going to build up to that. Last week he practiced on Friday and was still kind of iffy. Today he took every snap he was supposed to. We had 42 total snaps, and I bet he took 30 of them.

We'll see how he is as we go through it. Hopefully it will feel pretty good tomorrow with no residual, and then he'll roll again and probably take a few more snaps each day.

Original Text

Carolina Panthers running back DeAngelo Williams missed practice on Thursday due to a thigh injury.

Steve Reed of The Associated Press reported the news on Twitter:

Jonathan Jones of The Charlotte Observer noted the absence of Williams on the field during practice:

Panthers coach Ron Rivera also added more about Williams' situation, via Max Henson of Panthers.com:

In the season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Williams finished with 14 carries for 72 yards. The ninth-year player had 201 attempts for 843 yards and three touchdowns during the 2013 season.

Running backs coach Jim Skipper referenced Williams and teammate Jonathan Stewart's health and expectations, per David Newton of ESPN.com:

"It's all there," he said. "Oh, these guys, they really haven't lost a step. If anything, they've gained overall experience so that's got to enhance their overall game. It's good to see these guys all healthy and back at it."

The status of Williams moving forward is unknown at this point. If he is forced to miss time, more responsibility will be placed on Stewart, who typically splits carries with Williams.

Stewart had just nine carries for 20 yards in the Week 1 matchup against the Buccaneers but could be the workhorse if Williams is out. Having a limited backfield could be troubling for the Panthers going against a Detroit Lions defense that ranked sixth in rushing defense in 2013.
