Updates from Wednesday, Sept. 17

Daniel Carvajal is closing in on a return to first-team action with Real Madrid following his recent hamstring injury.

Marca provided a significant update on Wednesday:

Original Text

Real Madrid full-back Daniel Carvajal has pulled out of the squad for Spain’s Euro 2016 qualifier with Macedonia, making him a doubt for the first Madrid derby of the La Liga season.

The Spanish football federation released a statement confirming the 22-year-old’s withdrawal, per Dermot Corrigan of ESPN FC:

"

Real Madrid defender Daniel Carvajal is leaving the national team camp due to a hamstring injury in his left thigh.

After a scan in Valencia this morning, Monday Sept. 8, under an agreement with Sanitas, the official medical partner of the Spanish national team, it was decided that Carvajal would leave the camp.

"

Atletico and Real lock horns at the Santiago Bernabeu in Week 3 of the Spanish domestic calendar in what’ll be a repeat of the 2014 Champions League final—a game Los Blancos won 4-1 after extra time. But if Real are to get the better of their city rivals again, they may have to do so without Carvajal, who has grown into an integral figure under the tutelage of Carlo Ancelotti.

The amiable Italian boss will be desperately hoping the former Leverkusen man is fit, as his astute defending and intelligent forays forward give the European Champions an understated balance down the right-hand side. He was excellent against Atletico in the aforementioned final, too, helping Real nullify the attacking threat posed by the Spanish champions.

If Carvajal isn’t fit, then the experienced Alvaro Arbeloa could be set to deputise. Alternatively, if Ancelotti feels he needs a player to replace Carvajal’s dynamism down the right-hand side, Sergio Ramos is capable of filling in at full-back, too.
