PSG Transfer News and Rumours Tracker: Week of September 8

Jonathan JohnsonSep 8, 2014

With the summer transfer window now firmly behind Paris Saint-Germain, the French champions can concentrate on the first half of their season without a string of star names being incessantly linked with moves away. Although wantaway midfielder Adrien Rabiot did not get the move he desires and remains at the club, les Parisiens managed to keep hold of everybody that they wanted to.

Ahead of the winter transfer window, the priority is to now find a new club for Rabiot. AS Roma are believed to be his most likely destination after coming close before the end of the summer window, but new suitors could emerge between now and January.

Otherwise, Laurent Blanc will be keen to keep his current squad intact and will perhaps hope to add one or two new faces in January, depending on whether or not UEFA's Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules are still wreaking havoc with PSG's transfer plans.

Kevin Strootman

One potential benefit of Rabiot's failed move away from the French capital is that it now offers PSG—in theory—a bargaining chip for Netherlands international midfielder Kevin Strootman. According to The Express' Jamie Anderson, les Parisiens are prepared to pay cash and offer Rabiot in exchange for the Dutchman in January.

While the arrival of such a talented player would be an undoubted coup for the French giants, the chances of this actually happening are quite slim. For a start, PSG would lose a player eligible—though currently unregistered—for the UEFA Champions League, but would gain one who would almost certainly have been cup-tied by that point.

Central midfield is also not in pressing need of reinforcement at present either, even if Rabiot is to leave in January.

Adrien Rabiot

The transfer window may have slammed shut without Rabiot completing his protracted move away from Paris, but interest in the 19-year-old has not died.

Roma coach Rudi Garcia appeared on French television channel Canal+ on Sunday and confirmed the Italian side's interest in the prodigiously talented midfielder before denying that the two clubs have reached an agreement, per Football-Italia.

PSG left Rabiot out of their 21-man UEFA Champions League squad last week, and that decision could be part of an eventual agreement with Garcia and Roma. With the teenager not registered to play in Europe for PSG, he will be eligible for continental football come January, if a move to the Italian capital materialises.

Marco Verratti

Despite being linked with a move away from PSG once again this summer, Italian international Marco Verratti is still at the Parc des Princes and is expected to pen a new deal shortly. The diminutive midfielder was linked with a move to Real Madrid before the close of the summer transfer window, per the Express' Anthony Chapman.

According to that same report, the Spanish giants' failed move for Verratti has put English Premier League trio Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea on "red alert." However, it neglects to mention the fact that the pint-sized PSG and Azzurri star is now set to pen a new contract with the French giants (h/t Robin Bairner of Goal.com's tweet).

Verratti recently expressed his happiness in France to Corriere dello Sport (h/t Football-Italia), and the 21-year-old remains a key part of PSG's plans.
