Anquan Boldin, Frank Gore, Carlos Hyde's Instant Fantasy Reaction After Week 1

Andrew GouldSep 7, 2014

Fantasy football players expected big things from the San Francisco 49ers against the Dallas Cowboys, and they mostly delivered during a 28-17 victory. The offensive workload, however, was delegated in a surprising manner.

Colin Kaepernick looked past Michael Crabtree throughout the win, instead awarding Anquan Boldin eight catches for 99 yards to Crabtree's two catches and 25 yards.

Neither found the end zone, as Vernon Davis stole both receiving touchdowns for himself.

Before reading too much into the situation, remember than Boldin began last season with 208 yards and a score against the Green Bay Packers. He did not provide another 100-yard outing again until Week 17.

He still finished with 85 receptions, 1,179 yards and seven touchdowns, but the 33-year-old disappeared during tough matches.

As for the ground game, while Frank Gore received the majority of the carries, rookie Carlos Hyde made the most of his, tallying 50 yards and a touchdown during his NFL debut.

If you're wondering when Hyde becomes the primary feature back, you're in good company. ESPN's Matthew Berry also called for a youth movement in San Francisco.

On Thursday, offensive coordinator Greg Roman told Cam Inman of the San Jose Mercury News that the 49ers will consider riding the "hot hand" in the backfield.

“If somebody’s hot, we’ve got to stay with the hot hand and try to have a plan ahead of time, though, to where we can utilize each player in a specific manner,” Roman said. “Things change in the course of a game, so we’ll see how that goes.”

In the final 10 games last year, including three playoff contests, Gore averaged 3.7 yards per carry. He's also past the running back expiration date at age 31.

So don't be surprised if Hyde continues to eat away at his touches, making the neophyte a must-own in all leagues.
