Colin Kaepernick, Vernon Davis' Instant Fantasy Reaction After Week 1
Colin Kaepernick and Vernon Davis have started the San Francisco 49ers' 2014 NFL season off on fire in Week 1 against a woeful Dallas Cowboys defense. It's a bit premature to say that Kaepernick and Davis are both destined for career years, but the early returns for fantasy owners are exciting.
Davis wound up with four receptions for 44 yards and caught both of Kaepernick's touchdown passes, as the young signal-caller completed 16 of 23 passes for 201 yards and had a 125.5 passer rating.
Kaepernick scrambled to find Davis on a 29-yard touchdown strike in the first quarter, and capitalized on a Tony Romo interception, finding Davis for a two-yard score on the first play starting on the short field.

Based on his dual-threat ability alone, many would already consider Kaepernick a No. 1-caliber quarterback in fantasy. While Kaepernick's body of work from the pocket is still incomplete, his first TD to Davis showed how special he can be when he keeps the play alive with his feet.
Hall of Famer John Madden feels Kaepernick is going to continue his promising career trajectory.
"There were people, from the time he took over for Alex Smith, that were looking for him to fail and wondering when that's going to be," said Madden, per the San Jose Mercury News' Cam Inman. "I look and don't think it ever is going to be."
A strike to Anquan Boldin to set up the Niners' first offensive TD of 2014 saw Kaepernick fire a rocket from the pocket, suggesting he's making strides in that area. If Kaepernick can keep that up, there's no telling how far he can carry the Niners, not to mention fantasy owners, this season.
As for Davis, he should be in any fantasy owner's lineup as a No. 1 player. Director of NFC football communications Randall Liu noted the significance of Davis' second TD reception on Sunday:
"And with his 2nd TD today, @49ers Vernon Davis now has 53 rec TDs, most in @nfl since 2009 (incl playoffs)
— Randall Liu (@RLiuNFL) September 7, 2014"
Coming off a year in which he caught 13 touchdowns, there's no reason for Davis' stock to point anywhere but up. Despite not having a season over 1,000 yards, this could be the year Davis gets it done.
The Niners don't have a lot of truly proven receivers beyond the aging Boldin and Michael Crabtree, leaving Davis as a more likely, more frequent target for Kaepernick. Davis has been a go-to option in the scoring zone, and should continue playing that role well if Week 1's early eruption serves as any indication.
