Derek Anderson, Kelvin Benjamin's Fantasy Outlook After Cam Newton's Injury

Andrew GouldSep 7, 2014

The Carolina Panthers are an offense fantasy managers should avoid this Sunday with an injured Cam Newton clearing the way for ineffective veteran Derek Anderson.

Carolina's official Twitter page delivered a dagger to Newton's fantasy owners. After a week of speculation whether the star quarterback would suit up, it is now known he will take a seat against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers:

Don't even think about starting Anderson in his place. The 31-year-old, who has thrown four regular-season passes over the past three years, sports a dreadful 52.8 career completion percentage with more interceptions (55) than touchdowns (53).

Per ESPN Stats & Info, he hasn't been the same since throwing 29 touchdowns seven years ago:

As a result, owners must also move rookie wideout Kelvin Benjamin to the bench during his NFL debut. Gambling on the two connecting deep is a huge risk not worth pursuing with so many alternatives at wide receiver.

Rookie wideouts are shaky anyway, with or without an erratic quarterback under center. Ron Rivera will rely on a heavy dose of DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart, which slightly increases their flex appeal.
