Philadelphia Eagles star offensive lineman Evan Mathis has been removed from the team's Week 1 matchup with the Jacksonville Jaguars with a knee injury and will not return.   

The Eagles' official Twitter account reported the news following the injury:

Following the game, Les Bowen of the Philadelphia Daily News reported that Mathis tore his MCL:

Mathis is in his 10th season in the NFL and fourth with the Eagles. During his time in Philadelphia, he has missed just one game over the span of three years prior to leaving the season opener.

Brian Sexton of Jaguars.com notes what it means for the Jags' defense, which would be a common theme for other opponents if Mathis misses time:

Not much is known about the injury at this time, but Mathis' departure from the game is a huge blow for the Eagles looking ahead.

In a wide-open division like the NFC East, every win is crucial for the Eagles. If Mathis is forced to miss time in the future, the line could struggle even with Nick Foles under center and LeSean McCoy's explosiveness in the backfield.
