Denard Robinson, Jordan Todman's Fantasy Outlook After Toby Gerhart's Injury

Steven CookSep 7, 2014

Jacksonville Jaguars running back Toby Gerhart sprained an ankle in his team's Week 1 opener against the Philadelphia Eagles, and his injury could make Denard Robinson and Jordan Todman more relevant than expected in the Jags' backfield.

Gerhart went down with an ankle sprain and his return was questionable, per CSN's Geoff Mosher:

As ESPN's Adam Caplan noted, though, he was quick to return to the game and finished with 18 carries for 42 yards in a 34-17 defeat:

University of Michigan fans got a treat in the wake of Gerhart's injury as their former quarterback was the first up in the backfield. Robinson opened up with a six-yard rush, and took his first three carries for eight yards with one reception midway through the second quarter.

However, those were the only carries Robinson would muster on Sunday.

Ian Kenyon of Bleacher Report added his take on Robinson taking control of the Jags backfield:

Todman, a 24-year-old who amassed 256 yards and two scores a year ago, is likely to also see some more carries if Gerhart misses extended time. Jaguars.com's John Oehser reported entering Week 1 that Todman was third on the depth chart behind Gerhart and Robinson.

Todman finished with three carries for six yards, and one catch for five yards.

Gerhart has proven his durability over time, only missing three games through his four seasons in Minnesota. Now, unfortunately, his status remains unclear as an ankle sprain could linger for weeks.

Any No. 1 back and most No. 2 backs are relevant in standard leagues, and the Jaguars' hot start against the Eagles gives the indication that Jacksonville will be better than expected in 2014. At the same time, it's hard seeing Robinson or Todman getting enough carries to be dangerous if Gerhart sticks around.

If Gerhart's injury clouds his long-term outlook, Robinson or Todman might be worth a bench slot to see if either takes off with the extra reps.
