Arsenal Transfer News and Rumours Tracker: Week of September 8

James McNicholasSep 8, 2014

The transfer window is closed, but the rumours don't stop.

Already there is talk of what Arsenal may do in the January window. The Gunners could even strike a deal before then.

The rules of the transfer window dictate that free agents can move after the deadline, and there is mounting speculation that Arsenal may seek to bring in a central defender to ease their problems at the back.

At present, Arsene Wenger has just six defenders for four positions on the field. He is lacking depth and options.

Check back throughout the week as we update the latest transfer talk surrounding Arsenal.

Arsenal Target Paco Alcacer

1 of 4

Friday, September 12

Ben Jefferson of The Express believes Arsenal are lining up a move for Spanish prodigy Paco Alacer:

"

The 21-year-old has shot to prominence with Valencia this season and scored on his Spain debut against Macedonia on Monday.

Barcelona tried to buy Alcacer after he was top scorer at the under-17 European Championships back in 2011.

But the player opted to remain with Valencia and the decision appears to have paid dividends.

Now, reports in Spain suggest that Arsenal and Chelsea are hopeful of signing the player before Valencia can offer him improved terms.

"

Having just moved for another young striker in Danny Welbeck, a bid for Alacer seems unlikely at this stage. However, this story will clearly be one to watch in the upcoming January window.

Antonio Candreva Set to Stay with Lazio

Tuesday, September 9

Italian international Antonio Candreva could be set to spurn a move to Arsenal to stay with current club Lazio.

According to David Wright of The Express, the winger will reject the Gunners' overtures to extend his stay in Italy.

Arsenal fans won't be too disappointed, as they are already well stocked in the wide areas.

Arsenal Linked with Move for Free-Agent Centre-Half

3 of 4

Monday, September 8

With Arsenal woefully short of cover at centre-back, Wenger may try to bring in a defender on a free transfer.

The Daily Star (h/t The Mirror's Football Spy column) suggest that the Gunners could be prepared to target veteran Colombian defender and star of this summer's World Cup, Mario Yepes.

At 38, Yepes would instantly become the oldest outfield signing of Wenger's reign. It seems an improbable deal, but desperate times do call for desperate measures. Yepes may be the best available option.

Arsenal Still Holding out for Adrien Rabiot

4 of 4

Monday, September 8

After failing in a summer move for Adrien Rabiot, Arsenal are reportedly eyeing up the prospect of a January deal for the French holding midfielder.

According to Anthony Chapman of The Express, the Gunners and rivals Chelsea are both still keen to bring Rabiot in.

In the same article, PSG chief Nasser Al-Khelaifi admits that the player will invariably move:

"

We talked about Rabiot with Roma and other clubs.

But we did not come to any agreement. I love the kid - I think he's a great player and I want him to stay.

I have tried to get him to renew his contract, but without success. He wants to leave.

"

Arsenal are seemingly set to be near the head of the queue.
