US Open Tennis 2014 Schedule: TV Coverage and Live Stream Info for Day 14

Rob GoldbergSep 7, 2014

The 2014 U.S. Open has certainly not gone as expected, so be ready for some more surprises in the final days.

While fans were hoping to see a men's final between No. 1 Novak Djokovic and No. 2 Roger Federer, they were both upset in the semifinals, and the championship will instead go to the winner of Marin Cilic vs. Kei Nishikori.

The women's draw features some more recognizable names in the final as Serena Williams battles Caroline Wozniacki, but no result should really surprise anyone at this point.

The final of the women's draw will has an interesting feel to it based on the fact that Williams and Wozniacki are actually very close.

"Serena is one of my best friends. For a long time. But especially in the last year," Wozniacki explained via John Koblin of The New York Times, "Sometimes things happen in life and you kind of need a friend, and she stepped up and was there for me."

This Instagram post by Williams certainly does not qualify as trash talk before each player's biggest match of the year:

Still, the top seed in the tournament made sure people knew she would have no problem competing against her friend, via Mark Masters of TSN:

Williams came into the tournament as the overwhelming favorite after winning this event the past two years. However, she has struggled in Grand Slams this season, failing to reach even the quarterfinals in any of the first three events.

She has fared well in nonmajor tournaments, most recently earning a title in Cincinnati. The problem is she is not as invincible as she once seemed.

Of course, it is important not to overlook what she has done in this tournament. She has not dropped a set in six matches and has not even lost more than three games in any one set. Only once did she have more unforced errors than winners.

Adam Zagoria of SNY.tv joked about how dominant Williams was in the semifinals:

It certainly would not surprise too many people if the 32-year-old player won her 18th career Grand Slam title.

Meanwhile, Wozniacki is still looking for her first major championship, even though she was once the No. 1 player in the world. The good news is the young star has refocused and is now in good shape to make a run at the title.

Courtney Nguyen of Sports Illustrated explains the player's recent hot streak over the past few months:

"

She is 25-5 since the French Open (she was 15-9 for the year before that). She is, by my eye, playing the best tennis of her career. Her serve is better. She's stepping in and actually going for winners, something she didn't do even when she was No. 1.

"

With a tough win over Maria Sharapova in the fourth round, followed by a dominant 6-0, 6-1 victory over Sara Errani in the quarterfinals, Wozniacki has clearly returned to being one of the best players in the world.

If she can compete with some confidence and find a way to handle the pure power of Williams, she can pull off the upset to earn the biggest win of her career.
