Breaking Down the Main Event

Adrien Broner was viewed as the one of the best young fighters in the sport as he amassed an impressive 27-0 record to start his career, but he suffered a devastating defeat at the hands of Marcos Maidana in December of 2013.

That loss was viewed as an upset, but Maidana went on to give Floyd Mayweather a beating in his next fight, despite taking the loss. Broner’s unanimous-decision defeat doesn’t look so bad anymore.

Fellow fighter Paul Malignaggi acknowledged how excited he was for the main event:

While Broner has received plenty of fanfare, his challenger Emanuel Taylor is the ultimate underdog. The 23-year-old Maryland native has 18 wins and two losses but is not on the same level as Broner or viewed as a legitimate threat.

Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya told Dan Rafael of ESPN.com about Saturday’s matchup and what both men bring to the table in this fight: "Adrien Broner is a top-level talent who always elevates his game on the biggest stages, and there is never a bigger stage than in front of your hometown fans. But with speed, power and a golden opportunity, Emanuel Taylor is a tough test. This is a life-changing fight for him, which makes him particularly dangerous."

Fighting Taylor will not help Broner prove to any skeptics that he takes the toughest fights, but it’s a smart booking decision by the people who are guiding his career. After beating Carlos Molina in his last fight, Broner will build confidence and momentum if he is victorious over Taylor.

The challenger doesn’t have the power to pose a real challenge, and his previous losses indicate Broner can get to him early and often. If the former welterweight champion can hit Taylor and do damage, he will be able to end the fight early.

Using his elite speed and underappreciated power for a man of his size, Broner has the ability to do serious damage against a less experienced fighter like Taylor. On the other hand, Taylor must use his defensive ability to withstand Broner’s attack and counterpunch when he finds openings.

Unfortunately for Taylor, the old Broner will return and dominate this fight.

Predicted Winner: Broner via 10th-Round TKO
