Why Matt Cassel will Fail in Kansas City

Sean HeilJul 15, 2009

Before Tom Brady infamously crumpled to the ground in the first game of last year's NFL regular season, Matt Cassel was just another backup who would live in the shadow of a NFL superstar.

But with Brady's injury came opportunity for the career backup. Cassel was immediately thrown into the fire and succeeded more than anyone could have ever imagined.

With Brady coming back from the injury, there proved to be no room for Cassel to stay in New England, so the sensible thing to do was trade him, which the Patriots did to the Kansas City Chiefs.

It seems as though people believe Cassel is going to put up numbers similar to the ones he put up in New England.

There's no chance of that ever happening.

First of all, Cassel was a system quarterback in New England; he's moving to a different offensive system in Kansas City. His real talent will show its face and his stats will plummet.

Second of all, who is he going to throw to in Kansas City? The Chiefs traded away their best target in Tony Gonzalez and have absolutely no proven wideouts to provide Cassel with some security.

In New England, Cassel was surrounded by talent with receivers such as Randy Moss and Wes Welker. He is going to have nothing close to that in Kansas City. Also there's no running game in Kansas City; Larry Johnson has all but faded away behind a terrible offensive line, not to mention that same line can't pass block either.

With the Chiefs just recently signing Cassel to a six-year, $63 million deal, it only seems as though that deal will go down as one of the biggest wastes of money in sports history.

Cassel is not going to be able to blend with the lack of talent in Kansas City and will not be able to succeed behind a terrible offensive line and an even worse defense. What makes people think that one good year with the best franchise in the NFL means that he can repeat that?

The Chiefs are making a huge mistake, and fans shouldn't get their hopes up, because this year is only going to end in more failure.
