UFC Announces UFC 103, Main Event Still TBD

Josh NasonJul 14, 2009

On Tuesday, the UFC officially announced UFC 103, set to take place at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, TX on Saturday, September 17.

But they did hold off on formally announcing the main event.

It's been widely speculated that former Middleweight Champion Rich Franklin will be headlining, but the UFC has yet to find him an opponent.

Last week, it was confirmed that it will not be Hall of Famer Chuck Liddell as had been rumored.

Even without the main event set, the rest of the card is solid, featuring some comeback stories and the possible next opponent for Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre.

- Tyson Griffin (13-2) vs. Hermes Franca (20-7)

This will be Franca's first fight since last October as he suffered a torn ACL earlier this year. He gets the exciting Griffin, who has won five of his last six—all by decision.

- Mike Swick (13-2) vs. Martin Kampmann (15-2)

It's expected that the winner will get a title shot at GSP's gold, and perhaps at the December card (depending on their physical condition).

- Josh Koscheck (14-4) vs. Frank Trigg (12-4)

Trigg returns to the Octagon after a four-year sojourn from the UFC and gets a stiff test in Koscheck, who needs a big win after losing two of his last three.

- Efrain Escudero (12-0) vs. Cole Miller (15-3)

After slogging through injuries, TUF 8 winner Escudero finally steps into the cage against fellow TUF alum Miller in what should be a fun fight.

Also expected to be made official soon:

- Mirko Cro Cop vs. Junior dos Santos: Who thought we'd see Cro Cop back in the UFC after that Dana White rant?

- Sean Sherk vs. Gleison Tibau: This is an interesting fight for Sherk, who seems far away from the title picture after losing two of his last three.

- Rafael dos Anjos vs. Matt Wiman

- Drew McFedries vs. Tomasz Drwal

Fight Club pre-sale is this Thursday, UFC Newsletter Club pre-sale (password: TEXAS) is Friday, and the public on-sale in Saturday.
