Maidana vs. Mayweather 2: Updated Odds, Undercard and Main Event Predictions

Tim DanielsSep 11, 2014

Floyd Mayweather and Marcos Maidana put on a terrific show in their first meeting. The current pound-for-pound king decided to be aggressive rather than sit back in a defensive posture, which allowed the challenger to shine even in defeat.

The result was a victory by majority decision for "Money." The battle was certainly close enough to warrant a rematch, though. So that's what boxing fans are going to get on Saturday night. Whether it can live up to the high standards of the initial bout is very much a question mark.

With that in mind, let's check out the updated odds for the rematch in Las Vegas along with a list of the undercard bouts also on the schedule. That information is followed by a preview of the main event and a prediction for its result.

The biggest question coming into the rematch is what type of fight fans are going to see. Maidana would prefer another brawl fought in close quarters where he can use his power, but Mayweather is better off seeking a defensive battle at a slower pace.

That's because the five-division world champion is clearly the more complete fighter. He ventured out of his comfort zone in the first matchup and managed to get the win, but he wasn't dominant. He shouldn't tempt fate twice by engaging in a similar bout this time around.

Mayweather is confident the second fight won't be nearly as close as the first. David Mayo of MLive.com noted his comments about being able to adapt, which is something he doesn't believe his opponent is capable of doing.

"

What I can do, what makes me a little different than any other fighter, is I'm well-rounded and very versatile, as far as I can box, I can counterpunch, I can bang, I can do a little bit of everything. That's why I'm at the pinnacle in the sport right now. Can he switch up anything? I don't really think so. I mean, that's just my gut feeling.

"

Maidana doesn't feature such a wide-ranging skill set, but the power he generates is enough to change a fight. He came out aggressive in the first meeting and forced his style of boxing to the forefront, which made for plenty of intrigue.

While it made for a better spectacle, it left Mayweather in danger even though he's an outstanding defensive fighter. He doesn't want to find himself in a position where the underdog gets multiple chances to deliver the one or two major shots he needs.

One factor that's generated attention leading up to both bouts is Maidana's gloves. He was forced to make a late switch last time as part of a compromise between the camps, and the issue was once gain at the forefront as they prepared for the rematch.

Of course, Chris McKenna of the Daily Star pointed out that if it was a major concern, they could have negotiated it before agreeing to another fight:

Though it's been a contentious talking point, it shouldn't be a big deal once the bell rings.

Ultimately, the rematch sets up favorably for Mayweather. He's more prepared to take the lessons learned from the previous clash and use them to his advantage. He will do a much better job of neutralizing Maidana this time around.

The challenger deserves credit for a strong effort in the biggest challenge of his career. Being able to match or exceed it is going to prove difficult, though. He hasn't shown that next gear necessary to get past a foe like his unbeaten counterpart.

Expect to see a more measured performance from Mayweather to limit the risk while also maintaining control of the fight throughout.

Prediction: Mayweather by unanimous decision
