Paul Millsap Signs the Blazers' Deal, Jazz Have Seven Days to Match

Busta BucketJul 12, 2009

On Friday night, restricted free agent Paul Millsap signed the offer sheet put forth by the Portland Trail Blazers. It's a hefty contract for a back-up, one designed to make the Utah Jazz think hard about what they have in Carlos Boozer and Millsap.

Here are the details of the contract. As shown by ESPN, it's front-loaded and would make Millsap a lot of money very soon:

The Blazers front-loaded the contract to make it difficult for Utah to match. They gave Millsap a $5.6 million signing bonus and agreed to pay him $4.7 million of his first-year, $6.3 million salary the day the contract becomes effective.

So a week from now, Millsap would receive $10.3 million. Add to that the $1.6 million that will be spread throughout next season and Millsap, who was paid just $797,581 last season, will be paid $11.9 million this year. The remaining $20.1 million will be spread over the final three years of the deal.

There have been differing views on whether the Jazz will match the offer. Initially. the team was adamant about resigning Millsap and interested in trading Carlos Boozer's expiring contract.

Utah is already over the luxury tax and they aren't exactly in a cash surplus. It will be interesting to see what the Jazz do this week.

There was a time last week where speculation had the Jazz matching Portland's offer to Millsap and trading Boozer to Chicago for Kirk Hinrich. It was going to be a win-win situation for Portland, but those talks are now dead for myriad of reasons.
