WWE's Shortest and Greatest Tag Teams Ever: Part One

Matthew HesterJul 12, 2009

Hello everyone as always thank you for spending some time with me today.

Whenever I read about tag teams being the greatest on here, it’s usually the same names that come up. You will read about the Foundation, the Bulldogs, and the Hardys. Those are just a few examples.

The tag teams I would like to talk about today were also great. The teams I’m about to list worked well together, they were over with the crowd, and most were tag team champs at least once.

There will be one difference between these teams and some of the other legends. The difference between the teams I’m going to list and the others are these teams were together for a short periods of time.

I will be talking about some of the greatest short-list tag teams the WWE ever saw. Their runs together were usually a year or less for the most part.

Before I continue on with the names, I will explain why these teams were short-lived. A lot of times teams are put together as part of a story line. Also, they will put teams together because they don’t know what to do with them at the time. These teams, for the most part, consist of singles competitors. They are also known as gimmick tag teams. These teams will rarely stick together for more than year. We have had some good gimmick teams and bad gimmick teams.

I will now list my favorite gimmick tag teams that I remember from the WWE. I hope you enjoy reading this article today. If you disagree, please feel free to let me know. As I have said many times before, I’m always up for a good rasslin' debate.

With out any further a dew, I give you my top ten gimmick tag teams in wrestling history.

10) Head Cheese

In the year 2000 the WWE would give us an exciting team called Head Cheese. Does that name ring a bell in the old noggin? If it doesn’t, let me refresh your memories.

Head Cheese, was the team of Al Snow and Steve Blackman. They were mid-carders on the WWE roster that really weren’t getting much air time. That was until they put this team together.

Head Cheese, would become an instant hit with the fans. Al Snow would play the off-the-wall crazy guy, and Blackman would play the straight-faced no-nonsense guy. It was kind of like a modern day odd couple.

These two would give the WWE fans some really funny moments. They would grow on the fans and were getting prime spots on Raw every week. As a team they also worked very well together. This odd pair worked so well together that they would even gat a shot at the tag straps.

They would go on to feud with the likes of Christian and Edge, the Dudleys, the Hardys and many more.

They never did win the belts, and six months later they would break up. Sadly, they both went back into mid-card limbo and would never leave. It was a fun ride, though, watching those two works together.

9) Kane and the Hurricane

In 2002 Kane had turned face, during which time he would earn a shot at the Tag Team Champs. The problem was that Kane didn’t have a partner. The whole WWE World would be shocked when he chose the Hurricane as his tag partner. They would go on to beat Storm and Christian to become the new Tag Team Champions.

They even had a finishing move where they would do a double choke slam. It was pretty funny stuff watching them team up. Sadly, they would only stay together a month.

The time they did spend as partners was very entertaining to say the least. I threw up a link if you want to see a little of them.

8) Chris Jericho and the Rock

This was another one-and-done team. In 2001 the Undisputed Champ, Y2J, would wind up being paired together with the Rock. They would wind up beating the Dudleys for the titles during their feud with the Alliance.

These two would actually work very well together in and out of the ring. The few matches they had were very well done.

With two of the most talented guys on the stick as partners, it is safe to say this would be a very entertaining and interesting tag team. These two would put on some of my favorite backstage skits ever.

The fun wouldn’t last to long, though. Less then a month later they would drop the straps to Booker T and Test.

Fear not though, I will leave you a clip of my favorite moments with the Rock and Jericho.

7) Steve Austin and Dude Love

In order to talk about this unlikely tag team we have to travel all the way back to 1997. Stone Cold and HBK were partners against the Hart Foundation. They would go on to win the titles and become the Tag Champs.

This reign didn’t last to long, though, because of an injury to HBK. Since they were unable to compete, the titles would be vacated. Well, this didn’t sit to well with the Rattle Snake. He would find a new partner and compete for the belts in a tournament. He would reveal his new partner as none other then Dude Love.

They would go on to win the belts by beating Owen Hart and the British Bulldog.

This team would be very short-lived, though. They only held the belts for a couple weeks and only defended the belts once. In fact, they didn’t even lose the belts to anyone.

The WWE just decided to take the belts off them and make them vacant. The footage is a bit crusty, but I threw up a link of these two in action.

6) The Power trip

This unlikely team formed after Wrestlemania 17 when the WWE combined two of the greatest Heels ever, Steve Austin and HHH, with Vince. The Power Trips would go on a war path, destroying everyone in their path.

They were booed out of every arena they would step foot in. They would also go into Backlash and beat the Brothers of Destruction for the tag belts.

No one was really sure if it was due to injury or not, but the Power Trips were broken up less the two months later. They would wrestle Benoit and Jericho and be defeated for the titles.

In that same match, HHH tore his quad and would be out for a year. I posted up a fun little match of these two against the Hardys.

Well that is all for now please stay tuned for part two of this series.

As always, have a great day and God bless.
