Newbie News: New Feature for Bleacher Report's NASCAR Page

Mary Jo BuchananJul 11, 2009

One of my greatest joys in writing on the Bleacher Report NASCAR page has been the opportunity to meet and get to know "up and coming" drivers in the racing world.

Whether in the ARCA series, the Camping World Series East or West, the Whelan Modified Series, or even at the local short tracks, dirt or otherwise, there are so many young drivers out there with just one thing in mind—to be the next Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Kyle Busch or Joey Logano in the NASCAR's Cup Series.

They seem to start their racing careers at a younger and younger age. Either that or I am just getting older and older.

But for many of these young racers, they are out on the track often before they have even mastered the ability to ride their own bikes without training wheels.

Each young newcomer has big dreams and usually a family member or two who is standing with them, sometimes pushing them out into the limelight.  Some start in the racing world of go karts, while others find their way in other types of race cars or even dirt bikes.

Whether they are racing for themselves or for their parents, each and every one of them has only on thing on his or her mind, winning.  Sure, they are out there to race and learn, grow and develop.

But what makes these racers unique and successful is their single focus on competition and their will to win.

These are the drivers with real stories to tell.  Whether they ultimately make it in the racing world or not, their lives on and off the track as they move through the steps in their careers fascinate me.

I am most intrigued to watch these young drivers, male and female, of all different backgrounds and nationalities as they battle each other to reach their highest goals.

And so, after encouragement from several writers on this site, as well as my family members, I am pleased to announced my latest series on new, up and coming drivers throughout racing.

I am dubbing this series Newbie News and intend to write about new drivers trying to make their way up the rungs of the racing career ladder.

I hope to interview them and bring their stories to Bleacher Report so we can all watch these "young 'uns" grow and mature.

The following two articles are the first in my series and I will be updating it as regularly as I come upon these new drivers.

Also, as many of you have done already, if you know of any newbies that should be featured, pass them along and I will be happy to take at look at their stories.

So, watch for my next edition of Newbie News, coming soon to your Bleacher Report newsstand.  In the meantime, enjoy the news on two of my favorite NASCAR newbies.
